Welcome to my studio

Welcome to My Studio

Settle into my pottery studio which is level access from the pavement alongside a big free and unrestricted car park.

Sit together, work together

Sit Together, Work Together

I set up a special space for this class with sat bench space so children are safe and at a appropriate height to work. You will be next to your child so as to encourage and work together.

Start with pre rolled clay and a simple template

Start with Pre Rolled Clay and a Simple Template

I will prepare even slabs on boards so the simple shapes can be cut quickly and we can progress to the creative bit!

Use a template to cut your base shape

Use a Template to Cut Your Base Shape

Easy to use card templates will guide cutting of the base shape which we will build onto.

Select your clay tools

Select Your Clay Tools

My collection of festive cutters can make simple shapes quickly and I’ll have lots of tools that we can use to print or stamp with too. Print, cut, model and shape, the more marks made the better the glaze will be!

Add shapes and modelling

Add Shapes and Modelling

Build up a border of festive elements which will decorate your light setting. I have lots of tools to hand.

Your finished work

Your Finished Work

I will guide your finished work through the firing and glazing processes and it will be ready to collect three to four weeks later.

A clay class for all the family, making festive light settings that can be a joyful part of your family celebrations for many years to come. The session is specially designed to include children under 12 in a seated space and is appropriately timed at an hour. [See Q&A to determine if this class is right for your children.]
Introduce all the family to working with studio-grade clay in a cosy and welcoming pottery studio with studio-grade materials and tools. All classes include full firing and glazing too, so the work will be functional and durable, preserving the outcome of your family’s creativity. Adults sit next to children so assistance can be offered alongside my instruction and demonstration.
Pre-rolled clay slabs are presented for cutting around a template. [We use entirely safe wooden knives.] Festive shapes can be cut with cutters or by hand, stamped or impressed, and applied to the surface. The more marks and texture, the better! We’ll use real greens to create realistic organic impressions too. Of course, freehand shape and mark-making are encouraged too.
Your work will be carefully dried, glazed, and fired at no additional cost and ready for collection 3-4 weeks later. These can seat electric nightlights or real candles, up to you!
What you'll get
All the family will create their own hand-built work and this will be fully glazed snowy white or deep luscious forest green and ready for collection within weeks.
Knowledge required
This is for beginners but equally suitable for experienced children or adults who enjoy working with this versatile medium in a shorter and sat down class.
What to bring
This isn’t particularly messy, but you might like to bring your own aprons.
Suitable for

Suitable for adults, and kids (minimum 4 years old).

An adult must accompany any attending kids, and must pay for a separate ticket.

This experience would also be a unique gift for her, gift for mum or gift for couples.

FAQ

Is this suitable for my very young child?
Children need to be able to be old enough to sit up in a chair, and this isn’t a running about space. There is a garden space right outside the door which is suitable for children who need to stand and roam about for a few minutes [with your supervision]. An atmosphere of calm immersion is encouraged inside.
Is there a toilet?
Yes, inside my studio there is a level access toilet.
Is this suitable for my older child or family?
Yes, older children really enjoy this and this will develop previous clay or other art & craft skills. The project can be pushed up or down on complexity and more independant learners will be satisfied with their experience! Adults who prefer or need a shorter session or to sit may find this session more suitable than the longer more generally stood classes.
See more FAQs
Is there anything else on site so we can make this a day out?
There is a cafe, we are right on the river for walks towards Woolwich or Greenwich and there is a climbing wall business right on site.
My group is bigger than four-can this work?
Let’s chat about how I can configure my space to include more than 4, message me.
Do you have good experience of working with children?
I have taught many children many times over the years in schools, festival, community engagement or private settings. I’ve taught children in high chairs, with additional learning needs, in big groups and one at a time. I am DBS checked & insured and overall I love teaching children and enjoy their responses, approach and chat!
Can we discuss additional learner needs?
Let me know of any additional requirements or concerns and let’s discuss how we can make this the best experience for your family. Clay work is a wonderful medium for everyone and there can be benefits and joy for all.
Can I book this class just for adults?
Yes - I have a class that is longer [2 hours] and this allows time for a more complex build, one of my favourites included a model train that ran around a track crowed with seasonal leaves and pork pies, and printed with a personal message. This sort of detail needs more than one hour to complete. See the adult class.

I am an experienced and friendly full time potter with a lovely working space within a vibrant makers creative community right by the Thames. I combine teaching privately and in community spaces with making hand built stoneware homewares for local sale at markets and in prize winning retailers. My ten years’ of teaching has included welcoming many individuals to my studio but also included primary to university level students, whole school arts week projects, SEN students, reach out for adults, adult and young person homeless and carers’ groups. This year I have formalised my teaching with a level 3 qualification, and also I love it, I really enjoy teaching.
It’s brilliant sharing the joy of clay work and the excitement of producing something personal or functional, & that’s even before explaining the miracle that glazing can achieve. At the end of class it’s satisfying to show the kiln and how the clay will progress through the process. And while it is such a pleasure to teach clay skills it’s also important to acknowledge the the well-being benefits, my small group classes allow for peaceful and companionable immersion in making or for a fun group when booked out by friends.
Come and share the clay! #ClayIsOurWay
