Make sure it is clean, smooth, and has something inside to prevent paint seeping through to the other side.

Sketch an idea

Sketch an Idea

Use a piece of paper to come up with a design idea! remember to think about simplifying it, as detail is difficult on the fabric.

Draw your design onto the tote bag

Draw Your Design Onto the Tote Bag

Use chalk or a pencil to transfer your design to the final tote bag, this will allow painting to be easy and simple!

Using the fabric paints, apply in thin layers to create your unique design.

Let dry

Let Dry

It is important that the paint is fully dry to the touch (painting in thin layers helps with this step)! Once this is done, remove the cardboard sleeve from inside (there may be some cardboard stuck to the inside, but this will go with washing).

Heat-set the design

Heat-set the Design

It is very important to do this in order to be able to wash the tote bag and make the art last longer. Place a tea towel over the tote bag with the design facing up, and set an iron on a no steam setting. Iron over the tea towel where the paint is for 5 minutes to secure the paint in place.

Washing

Washing

In order to machine wash the tote bag, turn it inside out and wash at max 40 degrees centigrade. There may be some chalk lines leftover from the painting session, these will go away with the first wash!

Enjoy your hand-painted tote bag!

Use your functional and unique tote bag in your life knowing that you did that!

In this fun and casual workshop, you will be provided with fabric paint and all the materials needed to create your own design on a useful tote bag that you can show off and cherish for years.
Having fun with painting a bag is a great way to make something that is both functional and your own! You could paint something sentimental or just have fun with friends painting something silly. Either way, the experience will always be remembered whenever you use that bag to buy groceries or take it out and about.
You will get the chance to sketch with pencils and crayons to plan your design before using chalk to draw the outline of your final design on the tote bag. Once that is in place, you simply use the fabric paints to bring your ideas to life and get to walk away with a hand-painted tote bag that will be both useful and unique!
The fabric paints provided are high quality and will be machine washable after heat-setting with an iron. You will be provided with all the information on how to do this and take care of your tote bag, as well as be provided with guidance, help, and assurance throughout the workshop by the host, Lina.

I’m a British-Lebanese Artist who studied and worked in Architecture for ten years before switching careers! Based in London, I make art inspired by human connection, crafting, shared spaces, and finding joy in community and expression. I’ve been selling successfully at markets and events for almost 2 years and love to connect with people over shared values of food and friendships. At markets I sell original work as well as giclee art prints, lino prints, greeting cards, and bookmarks with my work. Painting commissions is another way I make money, and I love the personal stories that art brings out of people and how creating something imbues a memory or moment with even more importance!
I'm a big fan of continuous learning, and creating an environment that allows play through reduced pressure. Dismantling our society's collective perfectionism is so important to allow mistakes and learning in the journey towards any creative endeavour! Having hosted life drawing classes, I know what tips and tricks can help people to loosen up get in the headspace of creating art rather than attempting to create something photorealistic.
I like using art as a way to understand my own values and life, and think it's a powerful tool to help every person do the same. What your mind lingers on and finds important is what makes you you! You can use art to make your life align more with your values simply by making it more clear to yourself what you cherish and want to think about more (in my case, friendships and sharing food with my community).
