Make a beautiful piece of embroidered art at this workshop in London.

2 hours Class size 1 to 10 guests       £54

In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn the traditional Japanese art of sashiko stitching, creating four distinctive pieces including three small coasters and one placemat. You'll master several geometric patterns while developing the meditative rhythm that makes this craft so appealing.
Concerned about your needlework abilities? This activity welcomes beginners with no prior experience needed. The structured approach and expert guidance from Yiran ensures everyone creates beautiful finished pieces.
Throughout this 2-hour session, you'll begin by exploring the rich cultural background and history of sashiko in Japan, including its practical origins and evolution into contemporary craft practice. After this introduction, you'll work with authentic materials to stitch four different traditional patterns. The workshop provides all necessary supplies—including a specialised sashiko needle, 30m of sashiko thread, three fabric pieces with templates, and one placemat. Many participants find the rhythmic nature of sashiko creates a deeply calming, mindful experience.
By the end of this how-to workshop, you'll discover the beauty of slow stitching as both an artistic practice and a form of meditation.

  • 5/5 from K Mather, attended Jun 2021: I was the only student registered for my class today but rather than defer the class, which would have been perfectly understandable, Yiran did a one-to-one; I had undivided attention and the 2 hours just flew by.She managed to pack so much in (without rushing!) with information about the history of Sashiko and the traditional designs used in the class but also plenty of stitching time for the nicely spread variety of sample pieces (4) that formed the basis of the class. All the materials had been beautifully packaged and arrived through my letterbox a few days beforehand, and Yiran followed up after the class with links to further information and sources of or the material so I feel I will know where to go next when I complete my samples.I thought this was a great introduction to Sashiko; thank you again Yiran!
  • 5/5 from Irene Han, attended May 2021: I had a fantastic class with Yiran, who took the time to introduce me to a brief history of sashiko before showing me how to do four different and very beautiful stitches. She was patient, clear and very friendly, and also helped me learn a new way of looking at the stitches, which was fascinating. She followed up the class with all the resources I needed to keep going. Highly recommend and thank you, Yiran!
  • 5/5 from Catriona Harris, attended Apr 2021: Such a lovely experience! Yiran was so kind and generous with sharing her expertise and the story of Sashiko and her family heritage. It was fascinating, and such a calm and meditative experience. The materials for the class were carefully and lovingly prepared (a huge amount of effort had gone into their preparation) and arrived in very good time. Yiran is an excellent and encouraging teacher. I would throroughly recommend this experience, it was fascinating and inspiring.
  • 5/5 from Apphia, attended Mar 2021: A wonderful introduction to Sashiko stitching, with plenty of hands-on practice and the right amount of background and history to provide context. I attended the course online and it was very easy to see the teacher's demonstrations. The teacher was very pleasant and informative, with a lovely calm manner. Highly recommended!
  • 5/5 from Emma Thompson, attended Mar 2021: This online workshop via Zoom was such an enjoyable and absorbing escape from the stresses and worries of the pandemic. Yiran sent out the beautiful package of supplies so everything was ready for the workshop, and she paced the session perfectly, starting with the cultural context of Sashiko, and ending with inspiration for future projects. Working with 2 cameras enabled close ups of her work to ensure the demonstration was clear, and she made time for questions from the small group attending. This was a birthday treat, I'd highly recommend it as a gift for any crafty person.
  • 5/5 from Gabi Ward, attended Mar 2021: A great introduction to Sashiko embroidery. The kit needed for the workshop arrived in plenty of time. Yiran is very friendly and a great ambassador for this traditional type of hand stitching which can also be used for mending clothing. I am looking forward to incorporating this into my sewing repertoire.
  • 5/5 from Chloe Chloe, attended Mar 2021: I absolutely loved the class with Yiran and really enjoyed learning sashiko. Everything ran really smoothly with the kit of materials being mailed out in advance and the course run over Zoom. Yiran is really friendly and a great instructor, even with the disadvantage of having to run the class over zoom rather than in person, and throughout the class she shared a lot about sashiko, including plenty of tips and tricks; about the cultural heritage of the Bai ethnic minority she and her family belong to; and about her crafting journey. Would highly recommend this or any of Yiran's courses or products on her website.

Yiran was lovely, she was super knowledgable and passionate about her love for cultural crafts, she was a great teacher too. The workshop was online, and we were sent materials before the class so everything was really well organised.

  • 5/5 from Beverly Blackburn, attended Jan 2021: A lovely relaxing and informative class on Sashimi embroidery. Very impressed with quality of teaching and materials provided. It was great to hear the history of the stitching and the back story for the patterns as well as seeing some of the modern applications. I am looking forward to completing the bag and I have ideas for future projects.
  • 5/5 from Laura Cb, attended Jan 2021: This was the first online crating class I have taken part in and it was a lovely way to spend the afternoon! Yiran was really welcoming and knowlegdable. • 5/5 from Agata Agata, attended Jan 2021: I was a little bit afraid that it was going to be dry or weird because it's online, but Yiran has been very good at making the atmosphere friendly and welcoming to anybody. I did some embroidery before, so I'm familiar with working with a needle, but still I felt like I learnt something during this workshop. Yiran was super cool about explaining some techniques 2-3 times during the workshop. She also patiently explained to us a more complicated pattern. I liked it more than learning from a youtube video or a book! I would definitely recommend this workshop to anyone who would like to start their first DIY project and thinks sashiko techinque looks nice :) but also people who have some experience can attend this workshop, it's super chill :)
  • 5/5 from Alice Nicholl, attended Jan 2021: It was great to have the option to do this class over Zoom during lockdown. It was handled with the utmost professionalism and I feel I was still able to follow what was happening as we had a small group and Yiran was happy to repeat while others continued with stitching at their own pace. The best thing though was definitely Yirans upbeat and happy personality. Thank you!
  • 5/5 from E E, attended Jan 2021: I learnt a lot about the history of Sashiko and of each individual pattern also the techniques involved in Sashiko. Yiran is a lovely friendly patient teacher. The presentation shared was very informative and clear. When teaching the techniques of stitching, everything was visible and clear. (Camera and lighting)The package she sent before the workshop was very neatly packed and secure.I highly recommend Yiran's workshops.

Conversation was light and easy. All in all, a good time!I'd highly recommend this, both as a great activity for yourself at home and as a gift to others.

Ive done several online craft classes during lockdown and this one is my favourite so far!

YICRAFTS is an east asian handcrafts studio based in north western London in Camden founded in 2019. Its focus is on the beautiful but vanishing traditional handcrafts and cuisine of China’s minority ethnicities. Intercultural sharing is constant and often unconscious throughout our daily lives, and hand crafts are the physical embodiment of culture and cultural sharing.
Founder Yiran is a member of Bai ethnic minority, and she has experienced the great diversity within the UK and London, but I have found that the diverse cultures of China’s numerous ethnic minorities are underrepresented, with ‘China’ viewed as a single cultural source. The opportunity to introduce and share the unique and sometimes surprising customs, traditions and practices of her home province inspires her.
It provides the chance to understand both commonalities and differences in culture, and to understand our shared history.
