Mixed Media Altered Book Collage Class

A fun and inspiring workshop to create your own altered book double-page spread.

5 hours Class size 6 to 12 guests

£65 (£65 per class surcharge applies for private classes) (PayPal Pay in 3 available)

Mixed media, in the form of an altered book, uses a range of different materials and techniques to put together interesting and beautiful art spreads. Using collage, paints, inks, pencils, pastels, and stamps, amongst other things, I build up the piece layer by layer. It's a wonderful creative outlet and a practise I've found so good for my mental health and expression.
No artistic experience or skills are necessary. Once you learn a few tips and tricks there are no rules and the only limit is your imagination!
On my workshop day, we will work together to make a double-page spread, from start to finish, in your own book.
Together we will work on:
  • Creating backgrounds
  • Incorporating ephemera
  • Expanding painted patterns
  • Sketching, planning, and painting accents
  • Finishing touches
You will leave with the work you produced along with your book to continue on with at home.
What you'll get
  • All materials needed to create your own Altered Book Art Journal. You will take the book home with you.
  • A worksheetI have put together to help you continue your Mixed Media journey at home.
  • Tea, Coffee, and Biscuits
Knowledge required
No previous experience necessary - very beginner-friendly!
What to bring
Just yourselves, but if you have any particular pieces of ephemera or art materials that you love and might want to incorporate in your spread, please feel free to bring these with you.

Paula and the Pencils
Paula and the Pencils

Hello! I’m Paula, an Illustrator and Maker who is never happier than when I am creating something new. I love to mix things up with various media including pencils, paint, fabric and my ipad. I enjoy working both traditionally and digitally.
I’m rarely short of ideas and my inspiration comes from pop culture, music, movies, nature and literature - they all find their way into my work. I bring my unique illustrations to life with dolls, wooden pins, mugs, bags, t-shirts and more.
I have been running my small creative business, Paula and the Pencils, for almost 8 years and I send parcels all over the world! I can regularly be found out and about at Makers Markets and, with my designer friend Emma, I run the Meet the Makers Markets several times a year. We also run the Pins and Pencils Art Academy providing art classes for kids.
My lovely little studio is at Burns Street Studios in Northampton, a wonderful creative space full of encouragement and inspiration – I look forward to welcoming you there!
