Wheel Throwing Pottery Course - Eight Weeks

Enjoy a deep dive into the world of pottery on the wheel at this 8-week course.

8 x 2.5 hours Class size 1 to 8 guests       £300 (PayPal Pay in 3 available)

A comprehensive 8-week wheel throwing pottery course, held once a week, will guide you through every step involved in making a finished ceramic piece on the wheel. We will cover some fundamental theory and focus on practising making a variety of shapes such as plant pots, cups, handled mugs and jugs, bowls, and many others:
Week 1: Introduction to wheelwork and studio practices. Students will learn to wedge, centre, cone, open up, and pull up walls.
Week 2: Expanded throwing practice. Students will continue to refine their skills, while also learning to collar clay to make jugs and vases.
Week 3: Introduction to trimming. Students will learn how to re-attach pots to the wheel, trim the walls, and make a foot.
Week 4: Introduction to making and attaching handles to trimmed pots.
Week 5-6: Further practice and time to work on larger projects.
Week 7: Trim and finalise all remaining work. Optional lesson on making handles included.
Week 8: Glaze all work.
The course takes place in our studio in the Jewellery Quarter and is suitable for adults who are starting out on their clay journey as well as intermediate makers who would like to improve their skills. Group numbers are capped at 10 people to ensure that every student receives enough one-to-one tuition and to allow a comfortable working environment.
Please note: If you would like to get your pieces fired, there is an extra charge of £5 per kilogram of clay (for example, a regular-sized mug is £2.50). Working with clay is a messy business, so remember to bring an apron and trim long nails as they can get in the way of your creative expression. Please bear in mind that it could take up to a month after the end of the course for pots to go through the final glaze kiln before you can collect them.

  • All tools and equipment are provided.
  • A small charge of £5 per kg of clay for pieces you would like to get fired.
