Discover the fascinating craft of straw marquetry in this introductory 3-hour workshop. This hands-on activity offers a wonderful opportunity to learn the basics of this beautiful, traditional art form.
During the session, you will learn the fundamental techniques required: how to correctly split, flatten, and apply the straw to create shimmering patterns and designs. Once you feel comfortable with these core skills, you'll start designing and crafting your own unique wall-mounted tile. Most participants are able to complete their tile within the workshop time, ready to take home and display. Should you need more time, you'll have the option to purchase supplies to finish your piece at home.
This educational, yet fun, workshop provides insights into the rich history of straw marquetry. You'll also have the chance to experience the calming, meditative state that practitioners often find while working with the straw. Your instructor welcomes questions throughout the activity, ensuring a supportive learning environment.
While perfect for beginners, this workshop can also be tailored if you already have some experience with straw marquetry, ensuring you'll learn something new and further refine your technique.
You'll leave with a solid grasp of the basic principles, potentially your own finished tile, and a newfound appreciation for this historic craft. This illuminating session offers a unique chance to explore a traditional skill, engage in a mindful making process, and create a beautiful piece of decorative art.
Oh, and there will probably be snacks...

I'm Kim Jordan, a furniture maker and straw marqueteer based in London. I design and make contemporary furniture, lighting and accessories, much of which features straw marquetry.
I discovered the art of straw marquetry whilst training in Paris and immediately fell in love with it. The ability to play with light, reflection and colour gives my designs a whole new dimension.
Straw marquetry is an ancient craft that became famous in Paris in the 1920s where it was used to great effect on furniture and wall coverings. It requires patience, precision and focus - the perfect antidote to fast-paced office life.
I set up my business in London in 2020 and have been teaching straw marquetry classes for the past year. I was named a House & Garden Rising star in 2024 and am featured in the Homo Faber guide.
