Let me introduce Jules Craft@25’s guest maker for this two-hour workshop. Jules Mayouf is an expert textile maker, tutor, and author who creates modern, upcycled designs combining quilting, mixed media, and hand-stitching. A frequent TV guest designer and craft show demonstrator, she teaches all skill levels and is currently writing a book on textile-fusion bag-making. Join Jules for a beautifully relaxed textile workshop exploring the Japanese art of Boro and the mindful stitching tradition of Sashiko. This session is perfect for anyone who loves slow stitching, heritage crafts, or simply wants to create something meaningful with fabric.
Jules will begin by introducing you to the story behind Boro, a practical, resourceful technique born during a time when Japanese ports were closed and fabric was scarce. Families stitched, layered, and repaired cloth out of necessity, creating textiles that were both functional and deeply personal. Today, these techniques have found new life in our modern passion for recycling, upcycling, and sustainable textile making, as well as in the calming rhythm of slow stitching.
You’ll work with a curated mix of fabrics: linens, silks, velour, cottons, and more in varied weights and textures, paired with cotton perle and traditional sashiko threads. Jules will guide you through the piecing process and show you how to work the classic sashiko stitch to build your own unique layered textile. You will also learn how to use a design sheet and printed interfacing as stitching guides, perfect for creating more intricate sashiko patterns with confidence.
Once your fabric panel is complete, you’ll transform it into a simple lined pouch. Printed instructions are included so you can finish your pouch at home if needed. Fabric selections will vary, ensuring every maker leaves with a truly individual piece. Basic hand-stitching skills are all you need.

This venue is a short walk from Debden tube station (500m). We are located at CRATE Loughton. Our closest station is Debden underground on the Central Line. Once you exit the station head left down station approach to the main road called Chigwell Lane. To the left will be a crossing which you will need to cross. Once you are on the other side of the road turn left and walk past The Mellow Brasserie (The Mellow Brasserie should be on the right of you as you walk). Head to the crossroad and turn right onto Oakwood Hill and then the first right into Oakwood Hill Industrial Estate. The entrance is straight ahead under the automatic shutters where Crate Coffee is located.
