Join us for a Ghanaian cooking class in London. Jollof rice is the centrepiece of every celebration, every gathering, and every argument about whose version in West Africa is the best. In this class, you will learn to make it properly, alongside fried beef, a Ghanaian-style salad, and the infamous pepper sauce shito.
No experience is needed. Whether you’re a curious beginner or a confident home cook, this class offers a welcoming introduction to the fragrant flavours and techniques of Ghanaian cuisine.
What to expect:
  • Build an aromatic tomato base – learn how to attain the signature fragrant flavour to transform the taste of the finished rice.
  • Master your grains – understand why jasmine rice is the grain of choice, learn the perfect rice-to-liquid ratio, and the method that gives you perfectly cooked grains every single time.
  • Explore regional variations – understand what makes Ghanaian jollof different from Nigerian jollof, Sierra Leonean jollof, and Senegalese jollof, and learn tips from across West Africa.
  • Picking the perfect plantain – learn how to read ripeness, control the heat, and get that deep amber caramelisation without burning.
  • Enjoy complimentary drinks, including asaana, sobolo, water, and tea.
By the end of the class, you’ll have prepared a full Ghanaian feast and gained the skills and confidence to recreate these vibrant West African dishes at home.
What you'll get
  • All ingredients, equipment, and aprons will be provided.
  • You'll work in pairs to recreate all four dishes together.

The Lope Ariyo Cookery School is all about West African food and the food from other cultures that share similar ingredients because of history: the Caribbean, the American South, and Afro-South America. For now, we're starting with West Africa, but we'll be expanding our class offerings soon.
Founded by Lopè Ariyo, author of Hibiscus, Observer Rising Star in Food, and Gourmand Food Award shortlistee, the school exists because these cuisines deserve recognition and proper teaching.
We opened our doors for our first class in February 2026. Yes, we're that new. In that time, we've already taught over 100 students in a fun, no-pressure environment. Classes cover street food, breakfasts, jollof, soups, and stews, all taught by instructors who know these dishes properly. It doesn't matter if you've never cooked West African food before. It doesn't matter if you have. We want you at one (or more) of our classes regardless. No wahala.
