My story: Science, structure, and the serendipity of clay
Hi, I’m Kim Karmozyn, the founder of Kensington Pottery Ltd. My journey with clay spans over 20 years. I have been active in the West London ceramics community, and I am a member of SOFAP (Society of Fulham Artists and Potters).
My obsession with clay began as a hands-on pursuit during my time studying Architecture at Wellesley College and MIT in the USA. Working with model building and sculpture sparked a lifelong obsession with materials, form, and how they relate to the environments we build around us. I later formalised my structural training in London, earning degrees from both the University of Westminster and the prestigious Bartlett School of Architecture (UCL). Yet, while architecture focuses on macro structures, I found myself deeply drawn to the micro - testing limits, pushing boundaries, and interacting directly with the raw earth. For me, pottery isn't just a craft; it is where structural science and creative serendipity perfectly mesh. In my very first glazing course, I looked at the periodic table and saw the ultimate glaze chart.
Today, my process spans a massive variety of firing and glazing techniques, and I’m currently developing wild clays and glazes forged from natural rocks and found materials at my studio space in Greece.
Why I love teaching
Learning to create on the wheel is pure satisfaction, but watching a student find that same addiction as they master a specific clay body is incredibly rewarding. Every single piece we craft in the studio is a packaged, concrete moment of pure enjoyment and possibility. Opening a kiln brings the exact same anticipation and child-like excitement as waking up on Christmas morning.
I host these workshops because I want to share that precise magic with our South Kensington community. Whether you are learning to throw a pot for the first time or deep-diving into glaze chemistry, there is always something entirely new and exhilarating to explore together.
