Hi, I’m Becky, the maker, author and workshop host behind Retro from Scratch. I give unwanted books a new lease of life by turning them into notebooks, gifts and paper crafts, and I love helping other people discover what they can make from them too.
I started Retro from Scratch in 2011, bringing together my love of books, making and finding creative uses for the ones that were not in good condition. Old books have so much character: beautiful covers, interesting illustrations and sometimes handwritten inscriptions that hint at their previous lives. I take care to preserve those little details wherever I can.
My favourite part of teaching is seeing someone go from “I’m not creative” to “I made that!” You don’t need any experience to join my workshops. I’ll guide you through each stage, offer encouragement and help you find a way that works for you. There’s plenty of room for a chat, a laugh and making your creation your own.
There’s something incredibly satisfying about turning an unwanted book into something useful and loved again. That passion also led me to write Old Books: New Life, a craft book featuring 35 projects for recycling books and paper.
I live with multiple sclerosis, so I understand that everyone brings different energy levels and abilities to the table. Creating has an important place in my own life, and I want my workshops to feel welcoming, a space where you can try something new and just enjoy your time spent in that moment.
Alongside running my business for over 15 years, I spent 12 years at Essex Police Museum creating workshops inspired by its collections. I’ve also delivered creative sessions for corporate, as well as libraries, councils, charities and community groups.
Whether you come along with a friend or arrive on your own, I’d love to welcome you.
