Oil Painting Portrait Course in an Artist's Studio

Discover how to paint a stunning self-portrait in this 'Four Weeks to Your First Oil Portrait' workshop, hosted in an authentic artist’s studio on a serene East London city farm. This comprehensive four-week course is a fantastic activity for absolute beginners or anyone looking for a refresher in oil painting. You'll learn the foundational skills of this timeless medium, rooted in traditional methods, while also being encouraged to explore contemporary approaches and find your own artistic style.Your tutor, Liv, is an experienced international artist who trained at the Florence Academy of Art. She creates a friendly, supportive, and unpressured environment where you can learn time-honoured techniques and build your confidence. The class size is kept small to ensure everyone receives plenty of one-to-one guidance.Over the four weeks, this workshop will guide you from the very basics to creating a finished piece:

• Week 1: The language of oil – You'll familiarise yourself with the materials, learning about the qualities of oil paint and its mediums. You will start and complete a simple grisaille (monotone) still life painting to understand tones, values, and blending.
• Week 2: Depth and colour – This week is all about understanding colour. You will learn how to mix various palettes, including flesh tones, and practise brushwork techniques by creating a more colourful still life.
• Week 3: The art of the face – Working with a life model, you will focus on understanding the construction of the face and form. You'll create portrait sketches using dry materials like charcoal to hone your observational skills.
• Week 4: The final portrait – You will apply everything you've learned to create an in-depth portrait on a large 50 x 50 cm canvas, using a full and rich colour palette.

All the materials you need are provided, so you can simply relax and get creative.What's included:

Just let them know you are with "Georgie's art class, " and they will bring it to the studio around 12:45PM.*Studio & Location:*

• Location: Stepney City Farm, Stepney High Street, E13DG.
• The studio is heated with two large radiators, but please bring warm layers in case you feel the cold.
• Please note: This is NOT Hackney City Farm!

• You'll complete a portrait of the live model used in the final session, utilising all the techniques learned throughout the course.
• Your sketchbook will be filled with practical studies, including quick life sketches of fellow students and observational oil sketches from nature around the beautiful city farm setting.
