Silver Jewellery Casting Workshop

Like the idea of melting silver? Learn sand casting and drop casting in a small group class in Camden!

7 hours Class size 1 to 2 guests       £189

Add to your existing jewellery making skills with this silver casting workshop.
Join this course in London where you will have the chance to try out various techniques for melting and casting with silver (and pewter or bronze if desired) to create your own jewellery.
Ideal for those who already have some jewellery (metal working) experience.
This (and all my courses) is designed for adults. I do not currently offer classes for children and teenagers.
During this fun and creative day you will have the opportunity to play with fire and explore different ways of melting and casting silver and talk through ways to safely translate this to your own workshop if desired. We will cover both sand (delft clay) casting, and water (drop) casting, allowing you to create a diverse range of shapes and forms. Once you've experimented with these techniques, you will have the choice to transform your favourite shape/s into wearable solid silver jewellery, or to continue with more experiments.
In this course, we will cover; -
  • Safe setups for different scales of melting
  • Different types of silver, and other metals and their melting points
  • Torches, crucibles and furnaces - what kit do you need
  • Melting options for different amounts of silver
  • Drop casting - into water as well as other materials to create abstract forms
  • Sand casting - into a packed sand mould to replicate a pre-existing model or shape
  • Cleaning and finishing up the castings
  • Troubleshooting questions
We will be working with two opposite techniques - giving options to suit all sorts of design ideas. Starting by creating abstract, organic forms with the water / drop casting, we then go onto replicating pre-prepared forms using the sand casting process - the most successful forms for sand casting are chunky rings, medallions and relatively simple forms - you will have a selection of shapes to choose from on the day.
This class does not include wax carving or creating your own unique master model for the sand casting - there isn't time - that is a separate class / technique. For this class the focus is on learning how the casting process works and practicing your technique - you will be able to choose from a range of pre-made ring models, shells, buttons and other shapes to cast from, or you are welcome to bring your own.
Throughout the class, your instructor will guide you through the process and provide all the necessary materials, tools and safety equipment. You can expect a supportive and fun atmosphere where you can safely explore your creativity.
This class has a MAXIMUM of just 2 students, to ensure that both students get plenty of chances to melt and cast, and each gets plenty of individual support from the tutor.
Join this exciting class in London and discover the fun of creating jewellery through the art of melting and casting with silver.
Please note that the workshop is located down stairs and metal working can be fairly physical, so it may not be suitable for individuals with mobility or dexterity issues – apologies for any inconvenience.

  • 5/5 from Sophie Winter, attended Jul 2024: I had a great time at the casting day workshop with Penny. The class is small with max 3 people and there were only 2 including me in my class! This meant Penny was able to give us lots of time and attention, and be flexible with what we wanted to experiment with and learn. Penny was very friendly and approachable, the studio is easy to find and well equipped. I had such an amazing time and would thoroughly recommend to anyone considering doing any of the workshops with Penny.
