I first picked up a willow stick in 2007 and have been making things with willow ever since. What started as something I enjoyed doing has gradually become a big part of my life, and I now run willow basket-making workshops from my studio in West Sussex.
I just love willow - it’s such an earthy material. You can grow it, harvest it, prepare it, weave it and then actually use the thing you’ve made. There’s something rather satisfying about that whole process. I love the smell, the different colours and textures, and the fact that it’s a natural material with a very simple circular life.
I make all sorts of baskets and other things from willow, but my workshops are really about enjoying the process rather than producing something perfect. I like showing people how to work with the material, helping when they get stuck and watching a pile of sticks slowly turn into something they can take home and use.
I’ve taught lots of different people over the years, from complete beginners to people who already make things, and one of the best bits is simply meeting people. You don’t need to have any previous experience — just come along, have a go and see what you can make
