Advanced Rug Tufting Course

Choose & Confirm Your Design

Preferably at least 24 hours before your workshop, choose your design and confirm it with our team.

We’ll check that your chosen design is suitable for tufting and can guide you if any adjustments are needed.

Day 1: Prepare Your Own Canvas

Unlike our standard rug tufting workshop, in the advanced class you’ll learn how to prepare the canvas yourself.

You’ll transfer and draw your chosen design onto the tufting canvas, making sure everything is positioned correctly and ready for tufting.

Safety Briefing & Tufting Gun Setup

Before you begin, we’ll go through the essential safety instructions and correct use of the tufting gun.

You’ll learn how to set up and handle the gun, thread your yarn, maintain the correct pressure and control your movements across the canvas.

Tuft the Outlines

You’ll begin by tufting the outlines of your design, creating clean shapes and defining the different sections of your rug.

You’ll work independently while our team is there to guide you and help you refine your technique where needed.

Fill Your Design with Colour

Once your outlines are complete, you’ll begin filling each section with your chosen yarn colours.

You’ll learn how to create consistent lines, fill larger areas efficiently and work carefully around the details of your design.

Glue the Back of Your Rug

You’ll learn how to apply adhesive correctly and evenly across the back of your tufted rug.

This secures the yarn in place and creates a strong foundation for your finished piece.

Day 2: Professional Rug Finishing

Day 2 is all about learning how to professionally finish your rug. Rather than us completing these stages for you, you’ll learn and carry out the finishing process yourself with our guidance. You’ll brush through the tufted surface and prepare the fibres for trimming.

Shave the Surface

Next, you’ll learn how to shave your rug using professional rug-finishing tools.

You’ll carefully even out the pile, remove excess fibres and create a smoother, more consistent surface across your design.

Contour Your Design

Contouring is where your design really begins to stand out.

You’ll learn how to carefully trim between colours, shapes and outlines to create greater definition and give the different elements of your design a clean, dimensional finish.

Hoover & Final Clean

Finally, you’ll thoroughly hoover your rug to remove loose fibres and yarn created during the shaving and contouring process.

You’ll inspect your finished piece, make any final touch-ups and give it a final clean.

Take Home Your Finished Rug

At the end of Day 2, your rug has gone through the complete process — from preparing your canvas and tufting your design to gluing, brushing, shaving, contouring and cleaning.

You’ll leave not only with your finished handmade rug, but also with an understanding of the full rug-making and professional finishing process from start to finish.
