Discover the art of woven darning at this workshop held in the lovely Bard Books, Bow.
As winter approaches and we reach for those warm items stashed in the back of the wardrobe, moth holes, thinning elbows, or a stain that won't budge might tempt you to throw away an otherwise loved piece. Instead, join this workshop to master the woven darning technique and breathe life back into your favourite garments, choosing between a discreet mend or weaving in a splash of colour.
  • Immerse yourself in the therapeutic craft of darning and equip yourself with the confidence to tackle any hole.
  • Choose from an array of yarns and threads, with plenty to take home if you don't quite finish.
  • Be provided with all the tools to tackle your mend.
  • Bring an item of clothing to be mended or use a scrap piece provided.
  • Extend the life of your garments in a soothing and creative way.
By the end of this workshop, you'll be armed with the skill and confidence to mend any future holes or thinning, extending the life and personality of your favourite garments for years and years to come.

Cathryn Shires

female Women-owned

Hi love! I'm Cathryn, a seamstress and maker with over a decade of experience. I graduated from London College of Fashion with a BA in Bespoke Tailoring and have worked across the luxury and bridal sector, with a particular focus on high quality alterations and crafting one-off pieces. My adoration for all things handcraft means I favour traditional techniques over modern short cuts to ensure my work lasts the ages. Many of the techniques used in couture and tailoring ateliers today haven't changed in centuries.
An expert at repair, I believe every garment is worthy of a second, third or fourth life.
Sewing is a skill for everyone, it just takes a little patience and guidance to get you there. Whether through one-one mentoring, small classes or professional work place training, I love nothing more than passing on these invaluable life skills and seeing students confidence soar.
Whether you want to learn how to darn socks, alter your wardrobe or create a whole new piece, I'm your girl! Every skill and confidence level is welcome!
