Enter the entrancing world of watercolors with an award-winning watercolorist!

1 hour - 1.5 hours

Class size 1 to 15 (public classes), 1 to 2

  £68 - £72 (price varies across dates)

Join us for an immersive beginners' watercolour class, where you can discover the beauty of this medium in just 1.5 hours. Our expert tutor Ann Mackowski, featured on Landscape Artist of the Year and an exhibitor with the prestigious Royal Watercolour Society, will guide you through techniques and provide all necessary materials. Unleash your creativity and learn from the best in this intensive and inspiring art experience.
We'll start with simple exercises designed to get even the most novice of art-makers started, learning how to glaze, wash, blend, dry brush, and work wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry using vibrant watercolours. You'll build up a beautiful sampler of all the techniques you can use that you can take home to use as a reference!
Next, we'll move along to a paint-along demonstration with Ann. You'll be amazed at the effects you'll be able to create with the medium as a novice, and from this part will also have a wonderful watercolour painting to take home and proudly display on your wall.
Finally, you will be given a choice of props - real fruit, flowers, and intriguing objects, and given time to create your very own still life! Don't worry, you'll get plenty of pointers about composition, and throughout the process of painting, you'll receive one-on-one attention so you can make the most out of your masterpiece.
Miss something? Don't worry! Additionally, we offer access to online study resources, including video tutorials, allowing you to review and reinforce what we cover in class. Just bring yourself - all materials are provided.
Please note--for more dates for instant bookings for groups of 2 please see added availability on our "Beginners Botanical Watercolours" page, book into your date of choice, and send a message with your preferred class.

Recent reviews of Beginners' Watercolour Class

  • 3/5 from Marilena Grattacaso, attended Apr 2026: It was a very nice experience, but not what I was expecting; the ad for the class says it is suitable for beginners, but even though I have used watercolor before I didn't feel it was very beginner friendly. No explanation about thecniques, no introduction to wet-on-wet or wet-on-dry, just to mention one. It was a pretty full class, and the teacher was quite busy trying to check on everyone, but only had time to come twice at our table, and no feedback was given, just a "good job" (it wasn't a very good job). I would have preferred something addressed at beginners and a little more in depth explanation about watercolour thecniques instead. There was reference to some YouTube tutorials we could have watched to grasp some more info, but if I want to watch a YouTube video I can do that at home, don't need to pay for a class. Again, I had fun and it was a good time out, but would not purchase it again and I don't feel like it is a class suitable for beginners.
  • 5/5 from Kamal Panchal, attended Dec 2025: Ann was a brilliant teacher who took us through several watercolour painting techniques. It was beginner friendly and her approach was patient and methodical. I'd highly recommend her classes and workshops!
  • 5/5 from Claudia Giancola, attended Apr 2025: I absolutely loved the watercolours class! The teacher was fantastic and super knowledgeable, patient, and really encouraging. The class itself was fun, and I learned different techniques that I can’t wait to keep practicing. It left me feeling really inspired and excited to continue exploring watercolours. Highly recommend to anyone.
  • 5/5 from Ade Hassan, attended Jan 2025: Really lovely and instructive class. She went through the fundamentals, and I learned a lot. Highly recommend.
  • 5/5 from Julia Clinch, attended Dec 2024: Wonderful 1:1 art class focussing on brush techniques and then putting them into practice by completing two bits of artwork that I’m actually quite proud of! Great mindful afternoon with fab clear and patient teaching :)
  • 5/5 from Anonymised ClassBento customer, attended Nov 2024: My teacher was lovely and I had a great session diving into the world of watercolour painting! The first half was about brush techniques and in the second half, we painted a lemon. I enjoyed applying the new techniques and overall, it was a relaxing and therapeutic experience I’d like to repeat. Thank you for the session!
  • 5/5 from Olivia Saunders, attended Nov 2024: Such a great class! We absolutely loved it and will definitely be recommending this.

I started Soho Life Drawing in 2018 after working professionally as an artist for several years when I realised that there was a lack of accessible and affordable creative outlets for non-artist adults in London. Since then I've run hundreds of classes both at my weekly drop-in class in Leicester Square; for corporations and animation studios including Buzzfeed, Liberty London, and Sharkmob; and universities such as the University of the Arts London. Privately, I teach professional artists who come to me for technical training.
As an artist, I've been exhibited internationally in both solo and group shows and have won several residencies--the most recent being Espronceda's 2020 Open Call. I was a shortlisted contestant on 2016's Sky Landscape Artist of the Year. I exhibit regularly with the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours on Pall Mall, as well as with the Society of Women Artists. While I've focussed on teaching in recent years, I still do some commissioned work and exhibit with galleries representing me. I have a Masters in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art and Design.
I love teaching art because I believe anyone can do it with the right training! In particular, I'm passionate about breaking down the internal barriers people not trained in art have about being creative. Creativity is important for so many reasons, beyond the finished product, and it's my goal to make my classes both extremely accessible and very affordable so that people from all walks of life have a chance to join.
