BLOCK TO TANK TOP
Transform a Basic Bodice Block into Your Own Design
One-Day Pattern-Making & Garment Development Workshop
Have you ever wondered how a basic pattern becomes a finished garment?
Join SAWRAP Academy for a practical, hands-on workshop where you will learn how to transform a basic bodice block into a tank-top pattern.
Working step by step, you will trace an existing bodice block, identify the key pattern features and adapt the shape to create a sleeveless top. You will explore how neckline, armhole and silhouette adjustments influence the final design, developing a better understanding of the relationship between pattern cutting and garment construction.
This workshop is designed around practical learning, with direct guidance and demonstrations from Stephanie, a fashion designer, pattern-making specialist and experienced educator.
What you will learn:
  • How to trace a basic bodice block accurately.
  • How to identify the key features of a bodice pattern.
  • How to adapt the neckline and armholes for a tank-top design.
  • How to refine the pattern shape and check the relationship between the front and back.
  • How to transfer your adapted pattern onto paper for future use.
  • How to approach pattern adaptation with greater confidence and independence.
What you will take away:
By the end of the workshop, you will have developed your own adapted tank-top pattern and gained practical knowledge that you can apply to future garment-development projects.
Who is this workshop for:
This session is suitable for fashion students, aspiring designers, emerging makers and creative individuals who want to strengthen their pattern-making skills.
Some familiarity with basic garment patterns will be helpful. This is not intended as a complete introduction to pattern cutting from scratch.
About your tutor:
Stephanie is the founder of SAWRAP, a London-based fashion brand, and an experienced fashion educator specialising in pattern cutting and garment development.
Her teaching approach breaks technical processes into clear, visual, logical steps, helping students understand not only what to do, but why each step matters.

When I studied pattern-making at university, I found that some of the traditional teaching methods were difficult to follow. As someone with dyslexia, I often needed to see the process differently before it truly made sense.
Rather than giving up, I began developing my own visual approach to pattern cutting, breaking each stage into simple, logical steps that helped me understand not only how to draft a pattern, but why each step mattered.
As I shared this approach with fellow students, many found they understood pattern-making more clearly, too. Their encouragement inspired me to carry this teaching method into my professional career.
Today, after years of teaching fashion and pattern cutting, I continue to use this approach because I have seen how it builds confidence, removes the fear from technical drafting, and helps students create their own patterns with understanding rather than simply copying instructions.
My aim is not just to teach you how to draft a pattern, but to help you understand the principles behind it, so you leave with skills you can use independently in your own creative practice.
Students often tell me that they finally understand pattern making because every stage is explained visually and logically rather than simply demonstrated.
