Join this hands-on workshop in London and expand your creative toolbox by making your own natural fibre brush.
Drawing on her creative practice, your teacher Lana will guide you step by step through the process of designing and crafting your own bespoke mark-making tool. Alongside the practical making, you'll be introduced to the history of brush making and the traditional materials and fibres that have been used across different cultures and crafts for generations.
The session focuses on the brush as an expressive tool, but the piece you create can also be used to add texture to mixed media work, as a simple crumb brush, or as an elegant object in its own right. It's a low-pressure environment where you can switch off and focus on the tactile nature of the materials.
During the workshop, you will:
  • Discover a range of brush shapes and traditional natural fibres, including broom corn, arenga, and hemp
  • Learn about the history and heritage of brush making across different practices
  • Explore the different marks and textures you can create with your brush
  • Understand the qualities of various fibres and materials to design your own bespoke piece
  • Develop simple binding, knotting, and weaving techniques
  • Be guided step by step through the process by an experienced artist
You'll finish the session with a newfound appreciation for heritage crafts and a unique, handmade keepsake to use in your future projects. It's an empowering way to reconnect with traditional skills and take home a beautiful tool that's as functional as it is artistic.

We then had the opportunity to choose our own materials to make our own. Lana put together her workshop as skilfully and thoughtfully as she does her beautifully-made brushes - she’d made a small display of her work and materials, put on some Brian Eno for a tranquil atmosphere, and I appreciated that the class was small (4 people) so that she could guide us (me more than most ha) with attention and patience. Lana is knowledgeable, calm and approachable and the presence of her little dog was a bonus for us all. The fact that all of us wanted to buy materials from Lana to continue to make brushes at home is testament to how well Lana shared her skill and enthusiasm. Thank you Lana, and to the lovely people I found myself with. I attend and facilitate a lot of workshops, and this was one well worth travelling to the opposite end of the city in a heatwave for!

I’m a London-based artist, maker and designer, working from my studio in Earlsfield, South West London.
I make my own tools as part of my practice, and I believe there’s a real sense of empowerment in realising you can create the tools you need with your own hands.
I’m a self-taught brush maker, and I love sharing the joy of this tactile and rewarding craft with others. In my workshops, you’ll learn how to create your own handmade brush using traditional techniques and natural materials such as broom corn, arenga and hemp—no prior experience needed.
These brushes are both practical and expressive—perfect as beautiful, eco-friendly hand brooms, or for expressive mark making (my personal favourite).
I’ve led workshops across a wide range of creative disciplines, working with people of all ages and abilities, and I aim to create a welcoming, relaxed space where everyone can enjoy the process of making.
