What you'll do
This half-day course will teach you to maintain and sharpen your woodcarving chisels and gouges and explore the different types of sharpening equipment and techniques that can be used to keep chisels razor sharp.This course is perfect for those who have already purchased woodcarving chisels and want to gain experience in sharpening their own tools. Sharp chisels are a joy to use, easily cutting through even very hard timbers. However, without a good understanding of how to maintain a sharp edge, they can quickly become blunt and frustrating to use. In this half-day course, we will cover the different types of sharpening stones, slip stones, and strops, how to sharpen flat chisels and gouges, and the theory behind sharpening more complex shapes, such as V chisels and bent chisels.This course is specifically designed for people who already own carving chisels and want to learn to maintain them. During the day, you will be learning how to sharpen your own chisels, so please bring a small selection with you (3-5 chisels is ideal).Please note: chisels will not be provided for practice - you must bring your own.

Knowledge required
No sharpening or carving knowledge is required; this course is suitable for complete beginners.
What to bring
Your own carving tools (between 3-5 chisels) for you to work on during the day. Please ensure that at least one of these is a standard straight gouge. You are welcome to bring flat chisels, but the main focus of the course will be on carving gouges, including standard gouges, fishtails, and bent gouges.Sturdy, covered shoes are essential for your safety, and you’re strongly encouraged to wear leather boots or a safety work boot for maximum protection. Students who wear open-toed shoes or sandals will not be allowed to take the course. Safety boots are available inexpensively for both men and women from multiple suppliers online.Appropriate clothing for a workshop environment, which you don’t mind getting dusty, dirty, or covered in wood chips. Sharpening is often a messy process, so if you would like additional protection, please bring an apron.A notebook and pencil.

Your teacher
Clunie Fretton is an award-winning classically trained sculptor, master carver and gilder. After graduating from City & Guilds Art School in 2015 with a Distinction in Ornamental Woodcarving, she served as the Carving Fellow until 2016.Her work is included in the collections of St. George's Chapel Windsor, the Victoria & Albert Museum, The Houses of Parliament, the London Livery Companies, and churches and cathedrals around the UK. Clunie also featured as the master woodcarver on the Sky Arts television series Bill Bailey's 'Master Crafters'.A member of the Master Carvers' Association, she was awarded the Master Carver Certificate by the Livery Companies Skills Council and the Taylor Pierce Drawing Prize for Carving and Conservation in 2015. Her first book, 'Ornamental Woodcarving' was published in 2024, and she now teachers workshops to budding woodcarvers from her central London studio.
