Through Conservation into Craft, we bring these skills beyond the conservation studio, sharing heritage crafts in creative, accessible workshops that anyone can enjoy.Using real 23.5-carat gold leaf, you’ll discover the beautiful process of applying gold to a surface and create your own unique festive decorations.Set in the private cocktail bar on the third floor of The Railway pub, this relaxed and creative evening is an opportunity to try something new, learn a traditional craft and enjoy a welcome glass of Prosecco as you settle in.What to expect:
- Discover the art of applying gold, from the materials and tools used to the different techniques involved.
- Karina and Kathryn will share their knowledge as professional art conservators, demonstrating both gold transfer leaf and traditional loose gold leaf, including the use of real 23.5-carat gold leaf.
- You’ll also learn about the preparatory layers used to help the gold adhere to a surface.
- With step-by-step guidance, you’ll learn how to apply gold transfer leaf to your own ceramic decorations.
- Customise a ceramic bauble with a half-gilded, half-painted design, plus a mini ceramic star.
- Combine gilding with acrylic paints to create festive decorations that are entirely your own.

We believe making things by hand is even better when it’s shared.Conservation into Craft grew out of our love of experimenting with traditional crafts, trying new techniques and getting together to make things. As professional conservators, we’re fascinated by materials, how things are made and the stories behind traditional skills. We wanted to bring that knowledge into a more relaxed, creative setting where anyone can have a go.We’re Karina, a paper conservator with over ten years of experience, and Kathryn, a decorative arts conservator specialising in traditional skills such as gilding. Between us, we bring a wealth of practical knowledge and a shared enthusiasm for craftsmanship, history and creative experimentation.Our workshops combine hands-on making with a little insight into the techniques and traditions behind it all. No previous experience is needed - just curiosity and a willingness to try something new.Come along, learn a traditional skill, meet fellow makers and leave with something lovely you’ve made yourself.
