Discover a delicious and lesser-known Chinese street food in this Shanghai cooking class in London. In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn how to make Shanghai rice cakes (Nian Gao) and crispy pork chop — a classic comfort food combination loved by locals.
Rice cakes are one of the oldest staple foods in China. In the UK, many people recognise a sweet version like mochi, but in Shanghai we often enjoy rice cakes as a savoury dish. These rice cakes are chewy, satisfying and perfect for absorbing rich sauces.
In this friendly cooking class, your teachers will guide you step-by-step through the techniques needed to prepare authentic rice cakes and cook them into a delicious street food dish. Classes take place in a spacious, air-conditioned London studio with small groups, so you’ll receive plenty of personal guidance. On quieter weekdays, you may even enjoy a private class experience.
If you're looking for unique things to do in London, a memorable food experience, or a cooking class beyond the usual dumplings and noodles, this Shanghai street food workshop is a fantastic choice.

  • 5/5 from Samiha Chowdhury, attended Nov 2025: A wonderful cooking class, well organised with each station set up ready for us to cook. Was offered warm tea as soon as we started and it was topped up throughout the session so that was really nice. Simon was a great teacher and I learned a lot about the history of China as well as other interesting facts whilst we were cooking which I’m glad I now have that knowledge! We receive the recipe at the end of the class via email and I will definitely be making those delicious cutlets again! Overall a great experience and I would definitely book one of their other classes too :)
  • 5/5 from Alain Recoules, attended Oct 2025: Great cooking class, with a very friendly and compétent team. A great moment to share with friends or family.
  • 5/5 from Alexandra Perryman, attended Aug 2025: It was an amazing class! Pur teachers were lovely and patient, explained everything and we learnt a bit of history as well! Dad and I had a great time, we both loved it and look forward to more cooking.
  • 5/5 from Mandy Chen, attended Jan 2025: This was the perfect birthday surprise for my partner! We had so much fun learning from Hanna and Simon, who created such an inviting and relaxed learning environment. The food was delicious and my partner (who is an excellent cook) thoroughly enjoyed it and picked up some new tips and tricks. We couldn't recommend Hanna and Simon more and are already thinking of gifting one of their classes to other loved ones!
  • 5/5 from John Brown, attended Aug 2024: This was a Christmas gift from family. Good directions and very welcoming on arrival. All equipment provided and very good hygiene. Great teaching along with a lot of history about food and trends in China, Japan and Korea. Lots of practical skills learned. Amazing amount of food cooked and plenty to eat for lunch.
  • 5/5 from Jessica Cook, attended May 2024: Absolutely loved this class! Thank you Simon and Hanna for having us. We made rice cake and pork chop, and added on bao buns. Great fun, lots of new techniques learned and we’ll certainly be taking all we learned to try at home. The venue was clean, well managed and the hosts were wonderful. We’ll be back to try another of their classes!

At Hanna and Simon's Foodie Kitchen, we believe cooking is more than following recipes — it is a craft, a culture, and a shared experience.
Founded in London with a passion for precision and authenticity, we specialise in immersive Asian culinary workshops that combine traditional knowledge with hands-on learning.
From sushi masterclasses to Chinese tea ceremonies and artisan dessert experiences, every class is designed to give you more than just a finished dish. We teach you the “why” behind the technique — so you leave with confidence, not just instructions.
Precision.
Our sushi classes focus on technique, structure and presentation.
We guide you to create beautifully shaped rolls with professional standards — even as a beginner.
Culture.
Our tea and Matcha workshops explore centuries of history and philosophy, helping you understand the story behind what you taste.
Creativity.
Our dessert workshops celebrate colour, texture and joy — turning simple ingredients into stunning, handcrafted treats.
We keep our classes small to ensure personal guidance and a relaxed atmosphere. Whether you’re joining for a date night, birthday, team event or simply to learn something new, you’ll be welcomed into a calm and thoughtfully designed space.
Many of our weekday sessions feel almost like private classes — giving you time to ask questions and refine your skills.
Our Philosophy
Craft. Culture. Confidence.
We believe learning should feel rewarding, not rushed.
Beautiful, not complicated.
Professional, yet welcoming.
When you leave our studio, we want you to feel proud of what you’ve created — and confident enough to recreate it at home.
We look forward to welcoming you to Hanna and Simon's Foodie Kitchen.
