Welcome to my studio

Welcome to My Studio

Let’s settle in first, with sat space for children. We’ll have a brief introduction to my studio and what I do there and what we might look at after the project is done. Children may be interested to see the kiln, how their work will become glazed and examples of additional pottery projects made by children.

Pre-prepared tiles

Pre-prepared Tiles

I will have pre prepared black stoneware tiles ready for working on. These will be ‘leather hard’ and have a top layer of white. We will be using a traditional technique to scratch away this white to reveal line, pattern or text and create the basis for some colour to be added.

Plan our work

Plan Our Work

We’ll have a chat about the way that short messages can inspire us and help remind, remember, make goals, or whatever is appropriate for your family and of course you may already have your own ideas. Drawings or text are equally effective. We’ll make a quick plan on paper to use as reference.

Practice with the tools

Practice with the Tools

A quick practice with the tools helps everyone gain confidence and inspires new pattern too. Tools are pointy rather than blades, used at your own risk but my own children have used them safely.

A border creates the space for pattern and text.

You’ll all have easy and simple help to create the basics of your design

Drawing out the tile design is clear for everyone.

Use your paper work as reference and start scratching your design onto the clay. We’ll add colour too!

Finished work will dry slowly and be glazed transparent

I will guide your tile through the two firings and glazing process and your tiles will be ready for collection three to four weeks later.

Join this special pottery class in South East London, created for all the family to enjoy together in a professional studio space.
You will get to work with studio-grade clay, vibrant colours, and proper tools as you create your own unique picture tile. I will be on hand to help you with your design, guiding you as you use a traditional potter's technique on a hand-built stoneware tile. This is a wonderful chance for you all to add your own messages, drawings, and personal-touch of colour.
After the workshop, your family's tile will be fully fired and glazed, preserving your ideas and drawings.
You will leave having spent wonderful quality time together, looking forward to collecting your collaborative, kiln-fired artwork—a lasting keepsake of your family's creativity.
What you'll get
A fully glazed and fired tile with your text or drawings preserved forever. Collect the finished work 4 weeks after your class.
Knowledge required
No previous experience or ability is needed, but those more experienced in clay or design will enjoy this just as much.
What to bring
This isn’t a very messy activity, but you may get a bit smudged. Bring an apron or old shirt to protect your clothes if required. All materials are safe and water-soluble.
Suitable for

Suitable for adults, and kids (minimum 4 years old).

An adult must accompany any attending kids, and must pay for a separate ticket.

This experience would also be a creative gift for her, gift for mum or gift for couples.

FAQ

Can I leave my children with you?
I am fully DBS checked and insured but you’ll need to buy a place too and be on hand to assist younger children. Your children will produce work which will truly preserve those moments of passion, drawings and hand writing so I’m sure you’ll want to help them create something meaningful for you all!
Is this suitable for very young children?
This is a professional working space and not suitable for running about but children who can sit up in a chair and make marks will love this. Children that need a breather can pop outside with your supervision to the picnic area right alongside my studio. Possibly as a guide I would say over age 4 but you be the judge, I taught an amazing 3 year old this week.
Is this a good activity for older & younger children & a grand parent?
YES, and for you too! It’s something you can all do together at your own level and with your own ideas. Make a family set of tiles [and come back next year and make another set!]

Does this work for a single adult with children?
A family is of course your unique set up, this is intended for a mixed group and as long as there is one adult present I can add up to three younger ones. Also brilliant for older people who prefer to sit rather than a stood clay class.

I am an experienced and friendly full time potter with a lovely working space within a vibrant makers creative community right by the Thames. I combine teaching privately and in community spaces with making hand built stoneware homewares for local sale at markets and in prize winning retailers. My ten years’ of teaching has included welcoming many individuals to my studio but also included primary to university level students, whole school arts week projects, SEN students, reach out for adults, adult and young person homeless and carers’ groups. This year I have formalised my teaching with a level 3 qualification, and also I love it, I really enjoy teaching.
It’s brilliant sharing the joy of clay work and the excitement of producing something personal or functional, & that’s even before explaining the miracle that glazing can achieve. At the end of class it’s satisfying to show the kiln and how the clay will progress through the process. And while it is such a pleasure to teach clay skills it’s also important to acknowledge the the well-being benefits, my small group classes allow for peaceful and companionable immersion in making or for a fun group when booked out by friends.
Come and share the clay! #ClayIsOurWay
