Douglas was an excellent tutor, patiently explaining and assisting throughout the day. His passion for blacksmithing shone through. It's hot and hard work, but very rewarding. A really enjoyable and rewarding experience.
  • 5/5 from Scott McGuinnes, attended Apr 2026: The axe making workshop was excellent, really hands on and with great instruction. I'd highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in forging or just making things in general. Also makes a wonder gift. I've also done the fire poker and bottle opening workshop before and it was great. I'll definitely be back for future classes.

  • 5/5 from Andrew Dotto, attended Oct 2025: Pretty much everything I expected it to be, which was hitting hot things with hard things. The team was great, explained everything well and now I have an axe that can chop things. If you've got an afternoon spare, I can't recommend this enough.

  • 5/5 from Laurence McKernan, attended Feb 2025: Dan was friendly, informative and delivered a fun session. This is my second time at the forge and would recommend it to anyone. Working with your hands and understanding how metalwork works is a great way to start the day. Thanks Dan.
  • 5/5 from John Pirie, attended Sep 2024: Signed up for the axe making course to say thanks for my best man for organising my stag. Had an absolute blast and our teacher was super sound, one of those guys who you talk to and obviously has his feet grounded. Thanks for an awesome day, would love to come back for something else in the future! John

  • 5/5 from James McCracken, attended Jul 2024: Got a gift card for my birthday and took a blacksmithing class. I had a wonderful time. Sandy was a good teacher and knows his stuff. Took a few hours to make the axe head. Didn't have enough time to fit the handle but Sandy offered to finish it and deliver it next week.
  • 5/5 from Richard Atkey, attended Apr 2024: Sandy was an excellent teacher, we learned how to forge and heat treat steel and came away with fine axe. All tools and equipment were good and the PPE provided plus Sandy’s advice kept us safe.

Hi there, I’m Sandy, a 30-year-old blacksmith. I create functional metal items at my forge in Newbridge, Scotland. I began this journey to learn blacksmithing in 2019 after working in a corporate environment and seeking something more fulfilling. I love the challenges of working with metal and the things you can create.
Blacksmithing is an incredible and ancient art, it takes raw metal and turns it into something of use and beauty. Starting out with a piece of unassuming steel and applying force and heat, I am constantly amazed at the shapes and forms I can create. As my skills develop, my appreciation for the art grows and I look forward to making even more incredible works with you.
