4 hours Class size 1 to 5     label £45 - £65 (£45 per Child, £65 per Adult)

In this delightful workshop, you'll learn how to create a charming handbound pocket book. Through the art of longstitch and linkstitch techniques, you’ll sew through recycled 120gsm acid-free paper (other papers available) into a beautiful book with a 'wraparound' leather cover. - All materials are provided, and no previous bookbinding experience is necessary.

Choosing from a selection of different leather pieces for your cover, including vegan options, you'll discover basic decorative spine designs incorporating long and link stitches. - The option to add decorative weaving to the spine will be at your fingertips.

Expect a warm and welcoming environment, perfect for beginners. You may even choose to have your leather cover engraved with a personal design (must be arranged before the workshop). - Feel free to email your ideas a few days in advance for assistance.

By the end of the workshop, you’ll have created a unique handbound pocket book, showcasing your newfound skills. It's an activity that not only teaches you how to craft a beautiful item but also leaves you with a tangible, handmade treasure to take home.

Phoenix Handmade Books

Hello I’m Will Phoenix and I've always been slightly obsessed with books... thou not the reading type, but the empty ones...the dusty old journal, them marbled edged Victorian ledgers, the ageing leather notebook or the beautiful sketch pad. A constant sketcher, i still carry around a pencil and pad, happily losing myself drawing (instead of finger tapping a smart phone).

As bookmaker (I don't call myself a binder) I recently fell heavily for leather work, a new apprenticeship almost. After spending substantially more than the much talked about "10, 000 hours" on embossing (repoussé) soft metals, I felt it time for a fresh challenge. I started at the basement level and repeated what i did 24 years ago when I picked up my first sheet of metal to shape into a book cover

I presented my work for sale since the beginning and in this world of the cheap/mass produced, I've realised there is still a small place for the individual, the actual unique 'one of a kind' piece. I carry no airs and graces and never over-precious about my work. I simply makes books. I’m looking forward to teaching., Kindest Regards

Will
