What you'll do
Meet Your Batik Facilitator
Meet Vanessa, our Batik facilitator. Learn about the origins of batik in West Africa and the specific traditions behind the techniques you're about to use.
Choose Your Stamp
Design your piece using a beautiful selection of hand-carved wooden stamps sourced from Senegalese artisans, alongside foam stamps for finer detail.
Use Hot Wax
You'll dip each stamp into hot wax and press it onto your fabric, building up your own pattern one stamp at a time.
Soaking and Stamping
Apply a soda ash solution to help fix the dye, then wait a few minutes before dampening your fabric in water, ready for dyeing.
Dyeing Our Fabric
As you apply the dye, you'll watch the wax-covered areas resist the colour, preserving your stamped pattern in the original fabric colour while the rest of the cloth takes on rich, vibrant colour.
All Done
You'll leave with your own hand-stamped, hand-dyed piece of fabric, along with a take-home care card explaining how to properly remove the remaining wax and look after your finished piece.

Using hand carved wooden block stamps and quality fabrics, you'll engage with this traditional art form without leaving the city. Whether you're a complete beginner or just looking for a mindful, hands-on afternoon away from the everyday, you'll learn genuine techniques rooted in West African craft and leave with a beautiful piece of hand stamped fabric to call your own.
