6 hours Class size 4 to 6     label £100

Bark containers are one of, if not the oldest solution to contain foodstuffs, liquids and other goods. In this workshop, you will use methods and materials that span thousands of years into pre-history to create a beautiful, strong, and sustainable container from birch bark.

Your teacher will begin with a brief history of bark, roots and wood, plus examples of harvesting, storing and working with these materials before you tackle the main task of the day—creating your very own natural tupperware!

You'll create your container without any glue, nails or modern materials using an ingenious method that involves clever finger tab joints and friction. It's an immensely satisfying experience and a fantastic opportunity to get hands-on with woodworking in a welcoming environment.

At the end of this woodcraft class, you'll have a host of impressive new skills and a stunning, eco-friendly birch container to take home and use.

My journey into ancient ways officially began in 2011, when I started an apprenticeship with renowned woodsman Ben Law.

This apprenticeship saw me living full time in a 100-acre coppice in West Sussex, managing the woodland in the traditional way and learning ancient skills such as charcoal making, timber framing and the green wood crafts that used to supply us with the majority of our everyday items.

Following this apprenticeship, I moved to Dorset with my wife, started a family and began to pursue my fascination with ancient technology and ways of living full time.

My belief in, and respect for indigenous societies across the world is at the core of everything I do. Societies across the globe that have an understanding of the natural world, and our place in it, far surpass our western ideas. I've spent my life trying my best to learn from these societies and rediscover the scraps of our own here in this small corner of England.

This fascination with ancient hunter-gatherer societies, different ways of living and natural history drives my passion to learn, create and pass on knowledge which I believe can only be for the betterment of our society as a whole.
