In this engaging workshop, you'll learn how to craft a beautiful wire insect inspired by the delicate elegance of butterflies, moths, and dragonflies. You'll create a unique piece of art, perfect for hanging on your wall or displaying on a shelf or mantelpiece. This hands-on activity will teach you how to combine wire and beads to bring your insect creation to life, resulting in a charming ornament measuring 10-14cm in width.
No need to fret if you're new to wire crafting – this class is designed to welcome both beginners and more experienced crafters alike. The process of shaping wire and selecting beads is surprisingly soothing, offering a peaceful respite from the bustle of daily life. As you work, you'll find your confidence growing with each twist of wire and placement of beads.
During the workshop, you'll have the opportunity to:
  • Learn wire-working techniques to create intricate insect forms
  • Explore colour combinations using a variety of glass beads
  • Develop your design skills by either following provided templates or creating your own insect-inspired design
  • Gain insight into translating real insect features into wire and bead creations
As you become absorbed in the creative process, you may find the hours flying by, replaced by a sense of artistic flow and camaraderie with your fellow crafters. By the end of the class, you'll have a lovely handcrafted wire insect to take home, as well as the skills to continue exploring this captivating art form.
This enriching experience will leave you with a newfound appreciation for the intricate beauty of insects and the joy of bringing them to life through your own handiwork. All materials are provided, including a range of colourful glass beads and wires for you to choose from, ensuring your creation is as unique as you are. It's worth noting that while the insects pictured (except for the three butterflies on the wall) were made by previous workshop participants, your creation will be distinctly your own.
You'll leave the workshop not only with your beautiful wire insect but also with the warm glow of accomplishment after a relaxing and sociable day spent learning a new craft.

I'm Judith and I'm a designer maker and workshop tutor based in Leek, on the edge of the Peak District.
Twenty years ago I started playing with wire and applying some of the techniques and ideas that I had developed on my degree course in Embroidery. In my twenty years as a maker I have honed my wire work techniques and I make a variety of wire jewellery and decorative wire flowers that I sell through galleries and contemporary craft events. I work from my studio above a quirky cafe. I have lots of teaching experience and have been running my own workshops from my studio and other venues since 2019.
I am inspired by nature, and many of my ideas have been developed from observing and photgraphing wildflowers on walks around the Peak District.
I love teaching and sharing my passion for making and knowledge with others.
I can't wait to see what you will create!
