2 hours Class size 2     label £67

Unwind at the pottery wheel and make your own clay creations in this fun and relaxing pottery class in London. This two-hour craft class is ideal for beginners looking to learn new skills and includes plenty of time for you to get your hands dirty as you try out new techniques and create your own handmade pottery.

You'll be guided by experienced teacher Mark who is not only an amazing potter but also the founder of Potters Thumb, the pottery studio you will be welcomed into for this workshop. Mark has years of passion, knowledge and experience he can't wait to share with you.

Class sizes are kept small so you can be sure you will get plenty of feedback and support. Mark will be on hand to answer questions and help you grasp all the techniques and necessary skills you need to start making.

During this pottery class you will:

  • Learn all about clay and its properties.
  • Prep the clay for the wheel.
  • Center the clay on the wheel head for optimal building.
  • Learn how to pull up the walls of clay to create a vessel.
  • Master the best way to lift off the pot from the wheel head.
  • Trim your pot.

Please note:
  • The pots you create will need a few days to dry after the firing process. You can pick them up a few days later or we can post them to you at an extra cost. You can let your teacher know if you'd like to use this service during your pottery class.
  • Long nails are not practical when it comes to working with clay and will not be possible when you work on the wheel as they can be an obstruction.

Potters Thumb is a pottery studio based at the White Building in Hackney Wick. Founded by Mark Ciavola six years ago and originally based in Brighton, our new home in London is a fully functional, multi-use studio space offering five potters wheels, a pug mill, handbuilding facilities and kiln services.

Wanting to spread his love for ceramics, Mark founded Potters Thumb to make his work available to all those who appreciate hand thrown and hand made ceramic sculptures. With the new facilities, Potters Thumb can now also share the joy of clay work with others - whether you're a novice looking to get your hands mucky in one of our introductory classes, or a practiced ceramicist looking for a studio space to call home. Potters Thumb can offer something for everyone.
