Join Royal College of Art trained Karina Thomas of Black Swans Studio for an inspiring tartan weaving workshop where you'll delve into the rich heritage of tartan and learn how to weave your very own unique sample, perfect for creating a beautiful cushion.
Karina will start the workshop by showing you examples of the use of contemporary and historical tartan fabrics as inspiration. Tartan is a pattern that comprises two or more solid-coloured stripes that repeat in a defined sequence. Tartan fabrics are a part of our cultural heritage from the people who wore it to the workshops and mills who wove it.
You will be guided through the weave techniques and processes in order to come away with your own tartan sample.
During the class, you will learn how to:
  • Consider texture & composition, choose contrasting yarns from our collection of Shetland wool.
  • Warp up your frame loom with base stripes and start to introduce weft yarns to create your tartan using a plain weave.
  • Remove your weave from the frame, learning knotting techniques for finishing neatly.
  • Make your fabric up into a cushion with pad
This class is suitable for beginners or those with some weaving knowledge.
You will come away with your own woven tartan cushion and instruction sheets. Materials are all included in this workshop.
What you'll get
Shetland wools to work with, a weft needle, a beating up comb, cushion backing and pad, instruction sheets.
Tea, coffee, and homemade cake are provided during the workshop along with alight lunch of home made soup and focaccia

Black Swans Studio is a multi discipline art and design studio set in the Buckinghamshire countryside. Created by Karina Thomas and Lisa Vaughan, who met whilst studying textiles at The Royal College of Art, to share teaching skills and experience from their design backgrounds. Come and join the workshops here and enjoy this inspiring design space; a place of learning and retreat. Monthly classes are presently run in stitch and weave with other workshops planned from guest designers to offer a creative mix of craft and design courses. Our studio is based in the cow shed, one of a series of converted farm buildings at Culverton Farm.
This area of Buckinghamshire has historically been linked to the crafts industry. Wood turners, bodgers and furniture makers, lace and needle makers. As you travel around the hills and valleys of the county, wardrobe lane and needle makers house are evidence of this past craft lineage. Our workshops reflect this rich cultural history and aim to keep people connected to these skillfull craft traditions.
