Get hands-on and learn to construct your own shirt in this 12-hour sewing workshop in Edinburgh, spread across two Saturdays. You'll work through everything from reading a pattern and laying out fabric, to mastering the techniques that bring a shirt together – the collar, sleeve insertion, yoke, and cuffs. All materials are provided, so you can focus entirely on learning and making.
This class is all about practice and building real skills. You'll create a toile – a mock-up shirt made from beginner-friendly fabric – which gives you the freedom to experiment, make mistakes, and learn without pressure. Some of the techniques might feel new and unfamiliar at first, but as you work through them alongside your teacher, they'll soon start to click. By the end of the second Saturday, you'll feel genuinely accomplished by how much you've learned.
What makes this special is that you'll leave with far more than a finished piece – you'll have acquired skills you'll keep using long after the workshop ends. The confidence that comes from successfully completing something you've made with your own hands is something else entirely. You'll surprise yourself with what you can do.
What you'll get
  • Janome sewing machines to work on.
  • A completed garment.
  • All other materials, tools and our supportive guidance.
Knowledge required
Basic sewing skills are required. It is encouraged that people have completed the Level 3 class, but it is not always necessary if the student feels confident enough.
What to bring
Nothing, everything is supplied. You are welcome to bring your own machine though; in fact this is encouraged!
Session repeats

This class series runs over 2 consecutive sessions, which are 1 week apart.

Based in the West of Edinburgh in the recently redeveloped Riverside House by Wasps Studios. *Sew Gallus* is a combination of my two favourite words, 'Sewing' of which I have 20 years experience and 'Gallus' an excellent Scots word that often describes someone that is bold, fierce or daring. Something I was called as a child and was often discouraged from being.
I’m Cerri McKenzie, I've been teaching throughout Edinburgh for nearly 5 years now, in many roles from beginners to garment making and upcycling. I've discovered a real passion for helping people on their sewing journeys and now I'm excited to be starting my own workshops.
Outwith the teaching circle I have worked doing costume/work in Tv, Film and theatre after studying Fashion technology in Glasgow in my early 20's, but my first sewing job was actually in Alterations in a Tailors shop. All of this experience I think helps to give me an edge and helps me to think on my feet helping people through their sewing journey.
Don't forget to 'Trust the Process'!
