Join this weekend indigo resist dyeing textile course in North West London and connect with one of the most ancient dyeing methods in the world. This hands-on workshop is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the rich history of traditional indigo-dyed textiles from China.
This creative activity will teach you how to master three different traditional resist dyeing methods from China: stitch-resist (扎染), wax-resist (蜡染), and soy paste-resist (型糊染). You will not only learn the techniques but also discover the fascinating cultural stories behind these crafts.
On the first day of the course, you will have the chance to learn and practise all three traditional techniques. On the second day, you can choose the method you enjoyed the most to create a larger, more detailed project. We will provide some sample fabric, one square scarf, and one t-shirt for you to work with. You are also welcome to bring your own natural fibre items to dye and create with during the session.
You will leave this immersive experience with a collection of beautifully patterned textiles, equipped with the skills and inspiration to continue your indigo dyeing journey.

YICRAFTS is an east asian handcrafts studio based in north western London in Camden founded in 2019. Its focus is on the beautiful but vanishing traditional handcrafts and cuisine of China’s minority ethnicities. Intercultural sharing is constant and often unconscious throughout our daily lives, and hand crafts are the physical embodiment of culture and cultural sharing.
Founder Yiran is a member of Bai ethnic minority, and she has experienced the great diversity within the UK and London, but I have found that the diverse cultures of China’s numerous ethnic minorities are underrepresented, with ‘China’ viewed as a single cultural source. The opportunity to introduce and share the unique and sometimes surprising customs, traditions and practices of her home province inspires her.
It provides the chance to understand both commonalities and differences in culture, and to understand our shared history.
