Create your very own beautiful Tree of Life candelabra in time for Christmas in this 2 day ceramic workshop! This stunning object will make a wonderful centrepiece for your Christmas dinner table or a unique and special present for someone.
Over Saturday and Sunday, November 22-23, you will be guided by ceramic artist Madeline Herbert, known for her stunning handmade, Mexican-inspired candelabras. Madeline will help you to create your own version using stoneware clay and coloured slips, guiding you through each stage of the building process.
day 1: hand-building structure using rolling and slab building techniques. Begin to design and sculpt unique decorations, from clay, for your candelabra.
(Overnight drying to leather hard stage)
day 2: assembling of different parts, finishing, painting with coloured slips and stains.
You will hand-build and decorate your candelabra using a variety of techniques such as modelling, sculpting, stamping, slab building, rolling, coiling, and painting. Madeline will help you realise your own ideas, giving inspiration where necessary and offering loads of technical advice.
A little experience in working with clay is necessary for taking this course. It's a fantastic opportunity to build on your existing skills in a supportive environment and discover a new passion for the medium!
You'll finish the session feeling inspired by your new creation, taking home a unique, handmade candelabra ready to be the star of your festive table.

Dockyard Ceramics Studio is located in the heart of the old Woolwich Dockyard industrial estate, close to Woolwich and Greenwich and the river Thames. It is the home for a collective of potters, ceramic designers and lovers of all things clay who enjoy year-round access to this beautiful, light-filled space. Run by ceramic artist Jonquil Cook it is also the location for a series of classes and workshop for those wishing to explore the qualities of clay and the possibilities of hand-building techniques. Classes take place twice a week and attendee numbers are kept deliberately low in order to maintain a high quality of teaching, and an intimate and friendly atmosphere.
