Make your own piece of decoupage tray art to use and display at home in this creative craft class.

A serving tray with raised borders presents a wonderful opportunity to create different compositions using decoupage. Guided by your talented teacher, Gabriela, you'll learn to apply layers of paper onto your tray to create a beautiful piece of useable art.

During this half-day craft workshop at Gabriela's Camberwell studio, you'll select papers from an extensive collection to transform a plain wooden or plastic tray into a unique creation through decoupage.

Gabriela will guide you through the entire design process and show you all the tricks involved in applying layers of thin paper to a flat surface. Working in small groups means you'll have plenty of opportunities to ask questions and receive individual tuition to help you build your skills and create something beautiful.

Once you've learned some essential decoupaging techniques, you'll be able to upcycle other items - all you'll need is time, patience, and a few affordable materials and tools. You'll head home with a gorgeous decoupage tray to keep as well as a raft of crafting skills ready to use for future projects.

Gabriela is an artist and maker. She creates pictures, decorative objects, greeting cards and jewellery with images inspired by memory, nostalgia and a love of everything vintage.

Her work is often humorous and whimsical – unless her romantic side takes over and then you enter into a fairy-tale territory of old-fashioned script, pages of books and music scores populated by chivalrous gentlemen, glamorous ladies, butterflies and rabbits. She blends a fusion of painting and digital media – acrylic, watercolour and ink with digital print – onto paper and canvas to create a wide range of work.

In addition to her own creative endeavours, she is passionate about inspiring other people and sharing her skills, so she devotes a good portion of her time to teaching.
