I’ll show how designs can be created onto the tile surface with tracing , stencils or impressions and refer to the original method used historically.

Consider colour

Consider Colour

You’ll have a traditional pallet of colours to use or you can mix your own from stains that are used like water colours.

Line work is added last

Line Work Is Added Last

Once your colours are complete the final stage is to add any line work. Carve fine lines through and around your colour blocks. These will be backfilled with a fine inlay of black glaze.

Join this pottery painting class in London and create your own design on a 15 cm handmade stoneware tile using traditional processes and motifs. Whether you're a seasoned pro or have no experience with clay, drawing, or painting, you'll find plenty of resources and tools to inspire you and make the design process easy.
During this hands-on workshop, you'll start by sketching out your ideas and transferring them onto the clay surface. You'll then use underglaze stains to create a vibrant colour base over your traced design. After painting, you'll use a traditional scratching tool to lightly score line work through the images and into the clay. These lines are then washed with a black stain to create striking detail on your finished piece.
A clear glaze will be applied to brighten your colours before your work is fired in the kiln. You'll finish the session feeling inspired by your new skills, with a beautiful, one-of-a-kind keepsake to cherish.
  • Sketch your ideas – Transfer your personal designs directly onto the clay surface
  • Paint with underglaze – Create a colourful base that will become even brighter after firing
  • Master line work – Use a traditional scratching tool to score details and apply a black stain wash
  • Glaze your work – Apply a clear coating to make your design pop
Your finished tile will be fired and ready for collection three to four weeks later, serving as a wonderful reminder of your creative breakthrough.
What you'll get
You will enjoy the benefits of an immersive creative session, learn about traditional tile decorative techniques, and make your own stoneware tile with studio-grade materials and tools. This will be fully fired and glazed.
Knowledge required
No previous experience is necessary.
What to bring
You will receive a sheet outlining any design work you’d like to prepare beforehand. But this is not essential, and this can be created within the session. You won’t get hugely messy, but do bring an apron if required.

FAQ

Is this a pottery painting class?
We will certainly be painting as part of the process but this is a lot more. The class explains & uses traditional decorative ceramic studio techniques. You will be using image transfer, pencil drafting, painting & line work with carving.
I’m too busy to prep anything, will this matter?
No. You are welcome to work out a draft before you arrive (and you’ll have a sheet to explain the size and tips for best results) to maximise your work time with the clay but if you’d rather I have resources and templates etc for lovely designs.
Is this good for a group?
Let me know if you’d like to book for a group - I can use a much larger space at my studio for up to 12 but it needs booking. This is an ideal project for a hen or stag - create cork backed tiles to go on the tables at the wedding with a common colour theme?

Is this suitable for children?
You be the best judge of how long your child can concentrate. This isn’t a running around space. But older children will enjoy this. Maybe 12+ is a general recommendation.
This looks like a fun evening, can we bring drinks?
Of course. You will being my working studio but there will be no hazardous materials and I can set you a table for drinks.

I am an experienced and friendly full time potter with a lovely working space within a vibrant makers creative community right by the Thames. I combine teaching privately and in community spaces with making hand built stoneware homewares for local sale at markets and in prize winning retailers. My ten years’ of teaching has included welcoming many individuals to my studio but also included primary to university level students, whole school arts week projects, SEN students, reach out for adults, adult and young person homeless and carers’ groups. This year I have formalised my teaching with a level 3 qualification, and also I love it, I really enjoy teaching.
It’s brilliant sharing the joy of clay work and the excitement of producing something personal or functional, & that’s even before explaining the miracle that glazing can achieve. At the end of class it’s satisfying to show the kiln and how the clay will progress through the process. And while it is such a pleasure to teach clay skills it’s also important to acknowledge the the well-being benefits, my small group classes allow for peaceful and companionable immersion in making or for a fun group when booked out by friends.
Come and share the clay! #ClayIsOurWay
