Street Portrait Photography Workshop: The Art of Approach

3 hours Location Soho Class size 1 on 1   £250

Ever spotted someone you'd love to photograph but felt unsure how to ask? This London street portrait workshop with photographer Roman Koester turns that moment of hesitation into a friendly conversation, with plenty of hands-on practice along the way.
You'll start with an introduction to Roman's approach, then head out onto the streets to put it into practice. Watch how he opens conversations and asks permission, then try making your own portraits with guidance at every step.
You'll discover how your attitude towards the person you're photographing can transform the encounter and ultimately the portrait itself.
You'll explore how to:
  • Approach people with confidence, curiosity and respect.
  • Build a connection and help someone feel comfortable.
  • Work with natural light, backgrounds and composition.
  • Respond gracefully when someone declines.
  • Develop an approach that feels natural to you.
There's no pressure to become someone you're not. You'll work at your own pace, with encouragement to take that first step, whatever that looks like for you. Simply bring a camera you're comfortable using and a willingness to meet people, and you'll leave with practical experience to build on and fresh ideas for making portraits through conversation.
What you'll get
Personal guidance throughout the workshop, practical experience approaching and photographing people respectfully, and feedback on the portraits you take. You’ll leave with your own photographs and techniques to keep practising.

BEMOREROMAN
BEMOREROMAN

I’m Roman Koester, a London-based portrait photographer and artist working under the name BEMOREROMAN. My background is in architecture, but people - their faces, expressions and stories - have become the focus of my work.
My street portraits begin with a conversation. I approach people who catch my eye, ask permission to photograph them and see where the encounter takes us.
My work includes portraits of familiar London characters alongside people such as Tilda Swinton, Bill Nighy and Tom Hiddleston. A selection featured in my Soho exhibition, “Soho Characters and Other Icons.”
I’ve been taking photographs for over 30 years and established BEMOREROMAN in 2024.
In my workshops, I share how I approach people, build a connection and work with natural light and surroundings. I enjoy helping participants find the confidence to start a conversation and develop their own way of photographing people. You don’t need to be naturally outgoing - curiosity and a willingness to give it a go are a good beginning.
