No previous business experience is needed nor any professional baking background. All aspects are explained step-by-step in a supportive small-group environment.
What you'll learn
By the end of the course, you'll understand the craft of baking several popular breads plus the realities and requirements of running a home bread bakery. This includes:
Bread Baking Foundations
  • Bake a range of simple, reliable breads that your customers will love
  • Understand key concepts such as gluten, hydration and fermentation
  • Learn how different flours behave and how to bake with them (please note I do not cover gluten-free baking)
  • How and where to source ingredients for your home bread bakery
Starting Your Home Bread Bakery
  • Define your target customer and what to bake for them
  • Plan when, where and how you'll sell your bread
  • Understand the logistics of baking bread from home, including scaling up
  • Identify the essential equipment you'll need to start (and what can wait)
Running and Growing Your Business
  • Price your breads confidently and cost recipes accurately
  • Learn simple budgeting, bookkeeping and invoicing basics, plus registering as self-employed with HMRC.
  • Understand marketing essentials including websites and social media
  • Find and keep local customers through smart local marketing and promotion
  • Learn UK requirements for food safety, labelling, insurance and environmental health registration
  • How to prepare for environmental health inspections
How the Course Works
  • 3 - 4 live online sessions, each lasting approx. 1.5 hours
  • Sessions spread over 3 - 4 weeks to allow learning to sink in
  • Live bread making demonstrations and interactive business discussions
  • Small groups (maximum 3 participants) for personalised support
  • Delivered via Zoom, so you can join from anywhere (note that legal and regulatory information will be UK focused)
You're welcome to bake along with the demonstrations, but it's not required.
