One-to-one Sewing Workshop

Join us in store and talk to a craft expert for tips and advice on your sewing machine or project!

1 hour Class size 1 on 1       £28

Join a Hobbycraft Colleague one-to-one and ask any questions you have about your sewing machine! Need help setting up your new machine? Want to learn about how to use certain tools and accessories? Getting stuck on a certain technique? Our craft expert will share tips and advice tailored to you.

This is suitable for beginners looking to get started in sewing, providing the opportunity to get all the answers you need. It’s a great way to get a feel for your sewing machine, troubleshoot any problems you’re having with your current project in an easy, direct way or learn about features you’re not as confident with yet.

During the booking process, you’ll have the opportunity to let your Colleague know what you would like to focus on during the session. They’ll be able to prepare for a personalised workshop that answers all of your questions.

You’re sure to walk away a sewing pro, ready to take your designs to a new level!

*Please note that your workshop host will only have access to sewing machines that are currently stocked in Hobbycraft stores.

**Children 12 years and over can book onto this workshop but please note all children under the age of 18 will need parental/guardian supervision for the duration of the workshop.

Bring a friend: You can now use the £5 add-on feature at checkout to invite a friend along with you, whether you’re working on a project together or you’d simply prefer having some company during the session. Your friend can enjoy any demonstrations given, and they are free to ask questions, but they will not receive the same practical, direct one-to-one support as is offered to the lead participant.

Keeping everyone safe

At Hobbycraft, we want our workshops to be enjoyable, inclusive, and safe for everyone. Some workshops are suitable for children, and where this is the case, a parent or legal guardian is responsible for supervising their child at all times unless the workshop is clearly stated as suitable for independent attendance. Our colleagues and instructors are there to guide the activity and support a safe environment, and if any concerns about safety or wellbeing arise during a workshop, these should be raised with a member of staff straight away.

  • 5/5 from Sharon Newton, attended Oct 2025: I haven’t used a sewing machine for over 40 years, it was good to lean how to thread the machine and wind the bobbin and practice sewing. I am now keen to purchase a machine and get on with some projects
  • 5/5 from Emma Gurhy, attended Oct 2025: Karen was extremely friendly and quickly understood my requirements. Throughout the class she was patient and attentive and gave me lots of encouragement and confidence. Would highly recommend.
  • 4/5 from Cherrill Hembr, attended Aug 2025: It was fairly good and I found Karen to be very helpful. I had expected to go to a dedicated work room but we were at a table in the store which meant that we got interrupted by other customers asking for help. I had hoped that various machines would be set up ready to go but time was wasted in plugging in and setting up a couple of machines. I ended up buying a Hobbycraft machine and was very surprised not to get a money off voucher to either set against the machine or another product. All in all quite good but it should be so much better, I certainly didn’t get my moneys worth although, as I said, Karen was as good as she could be.
  • 5/5 from Lorraine, attended Jul 2025: I wanted a chance to get to grips with a sewing machine as ive not used one since was at school some 40+ years ago! Karen was extremely patient and very knowledgeable and I left the workshop feeling very confident. A sewing machine for my birthday is now the plan!
  • 5/5 from Sharon Francis, attended Jul 2025: Karen was amazing. Patient and explained things in a way I could understand. Thank you so much ️
  • 3/5 from Jane Bailey, attended Jul 2025: Karen was very knowledgeable and professional. However too much time was waisted finding the different attachments so I could try out machine. Would like to have tried another but run out of time. I feel also it was a lot of money for just trying out the sewing machine and this should have been done at no cost as I was potentially looking at buying a new sewing machine.
  • 5/5 from Julia Ball, attended Jun 2025: What a wonderful hour spent with Anna! She listened to my reasoning for wanting the lesson and gave great suggestions around suitable machines for me. Anna was VERY patient with me and gently explained each step from setting up the machine to the types of stitches. I was able to do a good amount of practical practice also. Anna was so good and I would heartily recommend her to anyone who is starting from scratch as I was. Since my lesson I have made some very basic bags and hemmed some old cut-off jogging bottoms. Anna reassured me that it was ok to not be perfect and with practice I’d find my lane. She also gave some valuable hints and tips. Many thanks Anna
  • 5/5 from Holly, attended Mar 2025: I had a fantastic time today! I have used a machine in the past but couldn’t remember how to thread etc. By the end of my session I felt confident. I was also thankful for the expert advice I received. I am now excited to have a go at sewing using my machine.
  • 5/5 from Nikki Garrod, attended Mar 2025: Excellent 1:1 sewing workshop. As a complete beginner I can now set up and use my Hobbycraft 19S starter sewing machine. Karen explained so well, showing me first then it was my turn to set it up and use. Karen’s a great patient teacher full of much advice. She advised me how to repair a tshirt I took along as my first mini sewing project. I know if I encounter any issues I contact her/others at Hobbycraft Taunton. I highly recommend! Thank you again, Karen, for all your help this morning.
  • 5/5 from Tess Gale, attended Feb 2025: My teacher Anna was absolutely brilliant, really clear and patient as I am a total beginner. I was nervous but she was very encouraging and I ended up having a great time. I shall be back for another class for next steps once I've had a chance to practice the basics a bit.
  • 5/5 from Julie Ludwik, attended Nov 2024: I booked a class as I wanted to learn more about the functions on my sewing machine. My teacher was really friendly and helpful. • 4/5 from Anonymised ClassBento customer, attended Sep 2024: My session was about what sewing machine I could get as a beginner. I also learned the basics of how to get started. The teacher(Karen) was quite friendly. I will recommend the course, you learn a lot in an hour session.
  • 5/5 from Sarah Gardner, attended Aug 2024: I thought the one to one session was exactly what I needed to advise me and give me guidance in buying the right sewing machine for me. Anna was very helpful and patient and her knowledge of the machine was great. I could have easily bought a machine on line but glad I bought mine through my local hobby craft where I spoke to Anna who was engaging and made the experience so much easier. I even went home and mended an item on clothing that I’ve been putting off doing for a long time due to her clear directions!
  • 4/5 from Julie Izard, attended Jul 2024: The lady was very friendly and helpful with all our questions. she showed us all that we’d ask about understanding the sewing machine & how to use it & we had a try ourselves. The only thing I would say is that we’re wasn’t much structure to the hour, we were asked what we wanted to do but sometimes that’s difficult to say when you’re a novice!
  • 5/5 from Fern Avis, attended Jun 2024: My daughter really enjoyed her sewing machine class. It was great value for a 1 to 1 session and I feel like we can really get started on some projects. Anna was very knowledgeable and explained everything really well.
  • 5/5 from Christine Scott, attended May 2024: The session was everything I wanted it to be. Anna was knowledgeable and friendly and answered all questions expertly. I was able to test the machine most suitable to my needs which took all the uncertainty from my purchase. A thoroughly enjoyable experience. I will certainly book another session if I require expert help with future projects.

  • 5/5 from Melenie Certain, attended Feb 2024: Fantastic lesson in bunting making and how to use a sewing machine. All Materials were provided. Pointed me in the right direction of materials and equipment that I needed.
  • 4/5 from Diane Phillips, attended Nov 2023: Anna showed me how to operate my new hobbeycraft 32s sewing machine stitching straight zigzag and embroidery type stitching plus how to operate the buttonhole attachment. She introduced me to a big specially designed bag to hold my machine too. I'm glad I went but it seems expensive £16 to book a workshop when paying £145 for my new machine. Hopefully I can now get underway although it might take several attempts at threading etc as all machines are different. Thank you Anna as you were very knowledgeable and helpful too.
  • 5/5 from Erika Varga, attended Oct 2023: Anna was great. I didn't have any experience about sewing and she explained everything to me. Showed me how to do the basic, we talked about techniques, fabrics and machines. I really enjoyed it.

The table was set up at the back of the shop with all the equipment we needed. Anna asked lots of questions to check what I wanted to know and was able to answer all my questions about machines. I came away feeling confident and ready to try some new projects.

  • 5/5 from Jenny Pavey, attended May 2023: Brilliant workshop, spent an uninterrupted hour learning about free motion embroidery. Anna, the teacher, was full of useful tips, very friendly and helpful. The Singer sewing machine that was provided was a joy to use. I learnt so much that I am now confident to continue with free motion embroidery at home. So good that you offer these workshops locally, for me just 1/2 an hour away. Learning whilst doing it with a teacher is so beneficial to mastering a new craft/ skill. Great value for money, great experience, thank you.

  • 5/5 from Michelle Mellon, attended Feb 2023: The teacher Anna was great and has given me the confidence to start sewing again after a long absence. They gave me advice on different kinds of needles and feet for different sewing tasks compatible with my sewing machine. We looked at different threads, clips, pins, cutters and other accessories I might need to get me started, Anna also inspired me with some simple sewing ideas for beginners using fat quarters. Anna was informed, friendly and knowledgeable and really put me at ease. We threaded the machine, practiced some stitches and looked at all the functions until I felt more confident. It was a good value workshop and I would definitely recommend it to others. Thank you Anna and Hobbycraft.
