This is suitable for beginners looking to get started in sewing, providing the opportunity to get all the answers you need. It’s a great way to get a feel for your sewing machine, troubleshoot any problems you’re having with your current project in an easy, direct way or learn about features you’re not as confident with yet.

During the booking process, you’ll have the opportunity to let your Colleague know what you would like to focus on during the session. They’ll be able to prepare for a personalised workshop that answers all of your questions.

You’re sure to walk away a sewing pro, ready to take your designs to a new level!

*Please note that your workshop host will only have access to sewing machines that are currently stocked in Hobbycraft stores.

**Children 12 years and over can book onto this workshop but please note all children under the age of 18 will need parental/guardian supervision for the duration of the workshop.

Bring a friend: You can now use the £5 add-on feature at checkout to invite a friend along with you, whether you’re working on a project together or you’d simply prefer having some company during the session. Your friend can enjoy any demonstrations given, and they are free to ask questions, but they will not receive the same practical, direct one-to-one support as is offered to the lead participant.

Keeping everyone safe

At Hobbycraft, we want our workshops to be enjoyable, inclusive, and safe for everyone. Some workshops are suitable for children, and where this is the case, a parent or legal guardian is responsible for supervising their child at all times unless the workshop is clearly stated as suitable for independent attendance. Our colleagues and instructors are there to guide the activity and support a safe environment, and if any concerns about safety or wellbeing arise during a workshop, these should be raised with a member of staff straight away.

  • 5/5 from Sarah Jane Acres, attended Jan 2026: I did a one hour Sewing Machine class with Debi at the Crawley branch and was excellent. Debi is an brilliant teacher, so knowledgeable and very patient. It was the first time I had use a machine since I left school 40 years ago and the lesson really gave me confidence to go forward and purchase a sewing machine. This is a great class to take before you make a committment and also sensible advice on the type of machine you need rather than spending a fortune on one that really isn't needed for a beginner. I owuld definitely go back for another lesson in the future. Thanks Debi.

I’m not sure I gained as much as I would have liked to but, having said that, the teacher was very nice and gave clear concise information.

  • 5/5 from Hannah Dalton, attended Mar 2024: Absolutely fantastic sewing session with Debbie today, extremely knowledgeable, flawless teaching, made it very enjoyable and supportive! Strongly recommend! Will be back for more sessions once I've mastered the basics! Debbie is an asset to Hobbycraft - don't let this lady go
  • 4/5 from Tricia Hughes, attended Mar 2024: I was confused when I booked because the form wanted me to pick a topic out of a limited menu - none of which is what I needed (though we did spend two minutes on how to sew a button hole) my teacher (sorry, really bad at remembering names) was very friendly and knowledgeable. She was able to find my machine and guide me on bits I didn’t know about it. I needed help in sewing fine, lightweight material and in that she was successful. However it would have helped if the machine she chose, because it was similar to mine didn’t keep “ breaking down” Nevertheless, it was money well spent.
