Learn how to create unique abstract and experimental collages in this beginner-friendly textile workshop. This activity is designed as an inclusive and encouraging space, perfect for meeting like-minded creative queer people while engaging with textiles in a therapeutic way.
This workshop is suitable for anyone! Whether you're a complete beginner or have some experience, you are warmly welcome. You will begin with an overview of basic embroidery stitches before being invited to explore collage using a variety of scrap and discarded textile materials. You can freely follow an idea or simply respond to the materials using intuition and creative stitching techniques.
You'll finish the session with more confidence in your creative stitching, taking home the beautiful textile piece you've created and feeling connected to a new community.
What you'll get
  • A unique collage artwork on calico fabric.
  • Embroidery hoop, embroidery floss, scissors, needles, scrap fabrics, and one piece of calico fabric cut per attendee.
What to bring
If you have any scrap or craft materials (excess yarn, old clothes, string, scrap paper) that you would like to bring and work with, you are welcome to do so! But it is not necessary, and all attendees will have everything they need provided at the workshop.

My name is Cristina Rago, a trans non-binary artist and workshop facilitator based in Wandsworth, London. I lead creative workshops across mixed media practices including textiles, stitching, painting, drawing, collage, and experimental art-making for both adults and children.
My workshops are centred around play, curiosity, and creative confidence. I aim to create welcoming spaces where people can slow down, explore materials freely, and enjoy the process of making without pressure or perfectionism. Whether someone is completely new to art or returning to creativity after a long time, I guide sessions with encouragement, adaptability, and a gentle hands-on approach.
I regularly facilitate workshops in community, educational, and private settings, supporting a wide range of ages, abilities, and learning styles. I enjoy helping participants develop both technical skills and personal expression through accessible, engaging creative exercises.
Alongside teaching, my own artistic practice explores memory, identity, emotion, and self-reconstruction through textiles, painting, and layered mixed media processes. Stitching and assembling fragmented materials became a way of exploring repair, reflection, and transformation within my work.
At the heart of both my practice and facilitation is the belief that creativity can be connective, restorative, and deeply human.
