Discover the art of Sashiko, a beautiful and mindful way to mend, strengthen and give your clothes a new lease of life. In this relaxed, hands-on workshop led by Mads Do & Mend CIC, you'll be introduced to the traditional Japanese stitching technique, turning worn or damaged clothing into something unique with simple, decorative stitches. Over two hours, you'll slow down, focus and enjoy making alongside others in a calm, safe and supportive space.
Mending is about far more than clothes. It's about care, connection and building stronger communities. As a social enterprise, Mads Do & Mend uses income from its paid workshops to run free mending groups for people facing financial hardship, isolation or mental health difficulties, creating welcoming spaces where everyone can learn, connect and feel less alone.
Madeline Tanoto will guide you step by step through the basics of Sashiko stitching and show you how this traditional technique can repair, reinforce and decorate your clothes. You'll discover the beauty of visible mending and see how simple running stitches can transform worn fabric into something personal and full of character. All Sashiko materials and equipment are provided, so you can relax and enjoy learning something new.
Bring a garment or piece of fabric you'd like to mend. Denim and cotton items such as jeans, a shirt or a cotton jacket are ideal for exploring this technique. If you don't have one to hand, you can practise on a swatch provided during the session.
Want to try another mending technique? You can book this workshop alongside the darning workshop for £70, saving £6, and discover two complementary ways to repair, strengthen and give your clothes a new lease of life.
Come along to stitch, mend and connect with others, and leave with skills that will help you care for your clothes for years to come.
