Robbie Troth

I'm originally from Coventry, but moved to Manchester when I was 25, where I live now with my partner and black cat Miso.

I'm a huge foodie, and love trying new bars and restaurants around the city. I'm also really into film photography, hiking and weightlifting, and try to travel as much as possible.

About me

  • I worked in hospitality for years, managing bars, nightclubs and restaurants before moving into sales.
  • I had a brief stint as a dog trainer.
  • I used to promote my own club nights and record label focusing on experimental grime and club music.

Top weekend activities

  • An early morning coffee and big breakfast.
  • A hike somewhere beautiful – there needs to be hills, forests and water, ideally!
  • Heading out to a few bars or pubs, with some global food and live music thrown into the mix.

Favourite craft

Film photography. I've been doing it for around 5 years now – mostly to document travelling or fun with friends, but I do want to get more serious with it. Not being able to check the image until the film has been developed means you think more carefully about what you want from a picture, rather than being trigger-happy with a camera or phone!

3 top tips to recharge and unwind

  • Never underestimate how effective exercise can be for your mental health. It can be gentle or intense – just find something you like, and try to do it regularly.
  • Try to get away from screens for a set time each day. It could be during exercise, on a walk, when you're reading… anything. I think having an hour where you don't look at any screens, and especially social media, is great for your mental wellness.
  • Don't be scared to try new things. I think it's super important to get out of your comfort zone sometimes; this could be with a craft, travel, events, or even something simple, like trying new food or doing an activity alone. It can help you build confidence: I think new experiences can help you see the bigger picture and cope better during difficult times.

3 top tips for embracing creativity

  • Don't be scared to fail. Don't expect to be perfect at anything – try and enjoy the learning and the creative process involved. If you really enjoy the craft, you'll do it enough to get better over time.
  • Try not to be put off by the thought of doing something alone. It can seem daunting to go solo, but if you've got a hankering to do something, you should try and scratch that itch. Chances are there'll be a whole creative community waiting for you anyway!
  • Understand that you don't have to put 100% into something all the time. Sometimes it's fun to just doodle for 15 minutes – you don't need to get the full sketchbook and charcoal out every single time!
