South West Activities
Join specialist artist and tutor Fernando Velázquez for a hands-on art workshop exploring the lives, techniques and artistic vision of two remarkable artists: Mary Cassatt and Vanessa Bell.
Discover Cassatt’s intimate depictions of everyday life alongside Bell’s bold experimentation with colour, pattern and modernist composition. Both artists developed distinctive visual languages that challenged conventions and helped shape the evolution of modern art.
Through practical creative exercises and guided discussion, you’ll explore technique, composition, colour, observation and personal expression, while discovering the cultural and historical influences behind their work. Consider how artists communicate ideas, emotions and individual perspectives and how these influential women continue to inspire artists today.
Whether you’re completely new to painting or looking to refresh your creative practice, this workshop offers an opportunity to experiment, develop your skills and discover new ways of seeing.
No previous artistic experience is required. All abilities are welcome. All you need is curiosity, an open mind and an interest in art.

I'm a PGCE-qualified art teacher who's been teaching since 2013, having worked with hundreds of students across schools, care homes, and community settings in the South West. I hold a 2:1 degree in Interior Design and now run Class Creative Studios, my own farm-based art studio and gallery in Dorset — set on the former estate of sculptor Elisabeth Frink, where my late stepfather once lived and worked.
I teach acrylic painting, lino printing, and home education art sessions, alongside visiting specialist tutors covering everything from stone carving to gold leaf gilding.
What I love most is working with people to ignite their creative spark and build their creative confidence. Outside the studio, you'll find me walking in nature or working on my own art — it's how I stay inspired.
