Embark on an enchanting journey into the world of Raku pottery with our captivating introductory session designed especially for newcomers. Unleash your inner artist as you explore the time-honoured Japanese firing technique of Raku, celebrated for its mesmerising and unpredictable results.
At the core of this experience lies Raku firing, a captivating and unique process that traces its origins back centuries in Japan. Our process commences by swiftly heating items using a microwave. Upon opening the kiln, the Raku-glazed petite brooches and we carefully place miniature bowls within a container filled with natural compounds. The Raku glaze's copper and cobalt oxides interact with these compounds, giving birth to unforeseen shades and intricate patterns. The oxygen also influences the transformation.
Following this, the 'mini' creations are submerged in cold water, creating a striking thermal contrast. This captivating phenomenon gives rise to alluring cracks, vibrant pigments, and a distinctive smoky finish to Raku pottery.
Under the guidance of our skilled instructor, you'll revel in the joy of crafting your own unparalleled Raku pottery masterpiece. Join us for an experience that combines tradition, creativity, and artistic expression as you immerse yourself in the captivating world of Raku pottery.

See booking optionsMy name is Mihaly Herczeg and I am an entrepreneur, maker, who likes experiments and challenges at the same time. I fell in love with clay, especially with porcelain when I started to learn throwing.
After years of practicing and playing, I designed and made all of the tableware in my restaurant, at The Rosemary. Throwing is like being in your self-made world. I realised that many people would like to have this experience with the clay. I have started to teach during the pandemic and I enjoyed that as much as the throwing itself.
I can offer a taster session or a beginner course, which includes 4lessons and takes you through making basic shapes, finishing, glazing and firing too. My classes are different than others because is a small class with max. 7 people and I can give you all the help, tips, correcting mistakes, what I made before (for example: breathing well is crucial at throwing). Also, if you sign up for any of my classes, you will be a part of the thrower students online hub, which can help you to be motivated, inspired and following each other progress.
As both a teacher and studio owner, it's crucial for me to provide young pottery artists with opportunities to gain practical teaching experience. That's why, in January, I welcomed Jago Rushton, a Cornish Ceramic Designer studying at Central Saint Martins School of Art, to join my studio. Inspired by Moroccan geometry and ancient Roman and Greek pottery, Jago brings a contemporary flair to his work. His passion lies in sharing his skills and nurturing others' appreciation for this remarkable art form.
