Hi, I’m Elspeth, avid crafter and professional rag rugger (now that’s something I never thought I would say!). When I was 14 I was asked to make a costume for my school’s recycled fashion show. I’d grown up with my mum’s rag rugs all over the house and thought it would make the perfect medium for my outfit. Hours and hours and t-shirts and t-shirts later, I finished my costume. I won second prize for my efforts but decided that rag rug clothing wasn’t exactly the easiest place to start… a rug would do for my next project. That’s where my story began and I’ve been rag rugging ever since.

I founded my company “Ragged Life” in 2014 after noticing that more and more people were looking to get into rag rugging. I started out running workshops at weekends and in the evenings in London and Hertfordshire but as demand picked up I left my old job to rag rug full time. I’m now a published author, have appeared on national TV and am a regular in craft magazines.

I love spreading rag rug cheer by running workshops across the country as well as selling rag rug starter kits and making handmade commissions.

Emily and teamaker (sorry we can't remember his name) were very welcoming and hospitable. We learnt loads and all came away very happy with our rag rugging achievements. Was a great venue. We all felt very relaxed and were able to celebrate our friend's birthday with prosecco and cake whilst working hard on our projects. Only downside was parking but most came by train.
We loved it!

Awesome class and we learned a lot. I came with my Mum so we could do it together but this was also a good opportunity to meet some new friendly people. There were snacks and teas etc available and the atmosphere as a whole was very inviting. Elspeth is a good teacher and very warm, most importantly you can tell she is very passionate about her craft and told us all about its history and prevalence in the UK too. We were first introduced to the basics of rag rugging and then we rag rugged a sunflower onto hessian, learning 3 rag rugging techniques with information on how to learn more. 3 hours was the perfect length of time for this workshop. We loved it so much we decided to buy the rag rugging kit at the end to make more at home. Would definitely recommend.

Teacher's response

Thank you Francesca, I'm so pleased you both enjoyed the class, you were a pleasure to teach :-)

Didn't know what to expect as first workshop attended, but was so welcoming relaxed. I met new people of different ages, venue is in the grounds of a large old house in the country and if you wanted a break you were allowed to wonder around the grounds. Tuition with Emily was good we learnt 3 basic techniques and rag rugged a sunflower on a hessian bag all materials available as was the tools. The tools you could purchase at end of class at a discounted amount, which was great and I took up the opportunity, so I can now start on making a rug. 3 options with materials were given to you in later part of day a choice of pillow, wreath or rug. Books were available to help you with design. Also examples of other finished projects, particularly loved the rag rugged upholstered chair. A fabulous day and would book another.
