Head to YI Crafts studio in Neasden, London, for a hands-on lantern-making workshop that explores the rich history and symbolism behind one of the world's oldest crafted light sources.
Lanterns began life as a practical light source, doubling as toys and decorations, before becoming a symbol of celebration in their own right. Traditionally shaped around natural forms, myths and local culture, they've grown more varied over time as different traditions have influenced one another.
During the session, you'll:
  • Learn the ancient tradition behind lantern-making
  • Discover what lanterns symbolise across different cultures
  • Get hands-on with a lantern-making activity, using materials provided by the studio
No crafting experience is needed – this workshop is made for beginners and welcomes children aged over 5 too, making it a lovely one to enjoy together.
Please note: you'll receive studio and workshop information by email a week before your session. As seating is limited, please cancel at least 7 days beforehand if you can no longer attend, so we have the chance to offer your space to someone else.

YICRAFTS is an east asian handcrafts studio based in north western London in Camden founded in 2019. Its focus is on the beautiful but vanishing traditional handcrafts and cuisine of China’s minority ethnicities. Intercultural sharing is constant and often unconscious throughout our daily lives, and hand crafts are the physical embodiment of culture and cultural sharing.
Founder Yiran is a member of Bai ethnic minority, and she has experienced the great diversity within the UK and London, but I have found that the diverse cultures of China’s numerous ethnic minorities are underrepresented, with ‘China’ viewed as a single cultural source. The opportunity to introduce and share the unique and sometimes surprising customs, traditions and practices of her home province inspires her.
It provides the chance to understand both commonalities and differences in culture, and to understand our shared history.
