This workshop is at YI CRAFTS studio, 60 Neasden Ln, London, NW10 2UW.
Traditionally, the lantern has been used as a light source and functioned mainly as a toy and decoration. But today, the lantern has come to symbolise the festival itself. In the old days, lanterns were made in the image of natural things, myths, and local cultures. Over time, a greater variety of lanterns could be found as local cultures became influenced by their neighbours.
During the workshop, you will:
  • Learn the ancient tradition behind lantern-making
  • Discover the symbolism of lanterns in different cultures
  • Engage in a hands-on activity using materials provided by the studio
Don't worry if you're new to crafting - this workshop is perfect for beginners and is also suitable for children aged over 5.
After your booking, you will receive an email about studio and workshop information a week before the workshop.
Cancellation policy - Due to limited seating, we request that you cancel at least 7 days before a scheduled class. This gives us the opportunity to fill the class.

YICRAFTS is an east asian handcrafts studio based in north western London in Camden founded in 2019. Its focus is on the beautiful but vanishing traditional handcrafts and cuisine of China’s minority ethnicities. Intercultural sharing is constant and often unconscious throughout our daily lives, and hand crafts are the physical embodiment of culture and cultural sharing.
Founder Yiran is a member of Bai ethnic minority, and she has experienced the great diversity within the UK and London, but I have found that the diverse cultures of China’s numerous ethnic minorities are underrepresented, with ‘China’ viewed as a single cultural source. The opportunity to introduce and share the unique and sometimes surprising customs, traditions and practices of her home province inspires her.
It provides the chance to understand both commonalities and differences in culture, and to understand our shared history.
