What you'll do

Join our talented artist as they guide you through painting portraits in a three-week painting course. This fun experience comes with all the art supplies you need and covers a wide range of art techniques that will help you paint a portrait from scratch.

This course is ideal for both beginners and improvers looking for things to do in London that will get them feeling creative and help them build skills. In our fun and relaxed environment, you will get a solid foundation to capture likeness and develop general painting tips like composition and brush technique.

Over the course of three art classes, you will cover loads of basic skills that will help you understand and capture human faces with all the beauty and intricacies. You will explore drawing, pastels, and painting as you develop your abilities in shading, proportions, and tone.

You will walk away from this portrait course with loads of new skills and information which you can put to good use by painting more faces at home. You will also have the finished pieces you achieved during your workshops to inspire you.

In this portrait painting course, you will:

Study the skull, facial structure, and proportions.
Explore portrait compositions from other artists.
Be introduced to drawing materials and equipment.
Sketch your own self-portrait.
Learn how to capture a likeness and explore an individual's distinct features.

Second stage:

Work with professional models and learn how to set them up for painting.
Develop your understanding of basic colour theory and work with a limited palette.
Learn how to work with a plumb line.
Practise techniques and discuss flesh colours.
Start work on a short pastel colour sketch working from a model.

Third stage:

Be introduced to water-mixable oil paints, brushes, and other equipment.
Learn various painting techniques such as 'wet on wet' and blending and blurring edges.
Explore how highlights can bring a painting to life.
Work on one long pose as your final portrait.

Please note: For the course beginning 29th April, there is no session on the 6th of May. The next sessions will be the 13th and 20th of May.
