Minhwa - Korean Folk Painting Workshop

An introductory workshop into the traditional art of Korean Folk Painting, 'Minhwa'.

2.5 hours Class size 1 to 20     label £45

Minhwa (민화 / 民畵), literally translated as 'People's Painting', is a form of Korean folk art that emerged during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) and was produced predominantly by anonymous craftsmen and ordinary people. Minhwa paintings depicted folk legends, as well as scenes of daily life and meaningful symbols of happiness, longevity, and wealth.

During this workshop, participants will learn about Korean art history and Minhwa techniques to create their own traditional Minhwa artwork. Participants will choose a template from one of the varied genres of Minhwa and create their work on Hanji (Korean paper) using Korean pigment paints.
Some examples of genres of Minhwa include Morando (모란도, Peonies), Sogwado (소과도, Fruits and Vegetables), Chaekgeori (책거리, Books and Things), and Yeonhwado (연화도, Lotus).

This workshop is hosted by CASS Art Kingston and is suitable for anyone interested in Korean art, aged 12+.
