Head to YI Crafts Studio in Neasden, London for a one-day workshop exploring the unique batik dyeing technique of the Miao ethnic group from Southwestern China.
You'll learn to work with traditional tools from Miao villages to design your own batik piece, before dyeing your fabric in a natural indigo dye vat in the afternoon. Expert instructors will guide you every step of the way, so there's no need to worry if this craft is completely new to you – it's a supportive, encouraging environment from start to finish.
By the end of the day, you'll walk away with a deeper understanding of this ancient craft, plus your own handcrafted piece reflecting the rich heritage of the Miao people.
Please note: you'll receive studio and workshop information by email a week before your session. As seating is limited, please cancel at least 7 days beforehand if you can no longer attend, so we have the chance to offer your space to someone else.

YICRAFTS is an east asian handcrafts studio based in north western London in Camden founded in 2019. Its focus is on the beautiful but vanishing traditional handcrafts and cuisine of China’s minority ethnicities. Intercultural sharing is constant and often unconscious throughout our daily lives, and hand crafts are the physical embodiment of culture and cultural sharing.
Founder Yiran is a member of Bai ethnic minority, and she has experienced the great diversity within the UK and London, but I have found that the diverse cultures of China’s numerous ethnic minorities are underrepresented, with ‘China’ viewed as a single cultural source. The opportunity to introduce and share the unique and sometimes surprising customs, traditions and practices of her home province inspires her.
It provides the chance to understand both commonalities and differences in culture, and to understand our shared history.
