Meet Finsbury Park Painting Club

Meet Finsbury Park Painting Club

By Phoebe Griffiths

Embark on an artistic discovery at Finsbury Park Painting Club, where the allure of paint and colour unfolds against the walls and beckons like never before! Located a short walk from Finsbury Park Station, this art-filled community club invites you to freely explore your creativity in a laid-back environment.
Founded by Kenya Josiah, a talented acrylic painter known for her vibrant artworks that celebrate Black womanhood, Finsbury Park Painting Club offers experienced guidance – whether you come along for a regular paint and BYOB session or a private party.
This studio extends a warm invitation to all, from anyone venturing solo into the world of art to those uniting with friends, family, or workmates. It's a canvas for connection and creative exploration, where each stroke tells a unique story.

When did your passion for painting begin, and how did you get started teaching?

“I've had a lifelong love affair with painting, from decorating my bedroom walls as a child to finally transitioning to full time artist in 2022. The idea of starting a painting club had been brewing for about six months, and then  at the end of January this year, I took the plunge and hosted an event with a few people, and it was a hit! Two friends even asked me to host their birthday parties, and that was the moment I decided to turn my passion into a proper business. And here I am, thrilled to share my love for painting with you!”

Daily creativity is a stress buster…

“It helps you disconnect, unwind and express yourself all at the same time.”

Working with paint will help you…

“Become more of a positive person! Painting is an excellent method of self-care that can help with mental health.”

Painting helps to connect people by…

“Putting them at ease. After a while, when people relax, I notice how the separate groups start chatting in the session and often merge into one big gang of friends. A few times, people have exchanged details or gone out for a drink or food after the class.”

My most heart-warming student moment ever is….

“When someone announced their pregnancy to their friends!”

Step outside your comfort zone…

“Take on a new challenge and you will surprise yourself with what you enjoy!”

The biggest transformations I see are…

“In the confidence of people who tell me “I’m rubbish at painting” or “I’m not creative”. By the end of the class, they’re often so happy with what they have created!”

Painting will show you…

“Everyone is creative, sometimes people just don’t get the chance to be.”

Sustainability plays a role in my teaching…

“I prioritise sustainability in my classes by opting for recyclable materials, such as using paper plates as palettes, and  to minimize  waste, I’ll provide guidance on the appropriate amount of paint to use. If a canvas arrives damaged, I repurpose it for practice sessions or as a canvas for demonstrating techniques. And, of course, I make a conscious effort to recycle anything that can be recycled!"
